Continuity of Real Functions on Subsets of ℝ in ε-δ Form

For a map from a subset of the real line into the real line, continuity at a point relative to the subset, and continuity on the subset, are restated with absolute differences in place of the distance.

Statement

In the setting of Routine Facts Used Without Citation: Arithmetic, Maps, Predicativity and Indices, let dRd_{\mathbb{R}} be the distance on R\mathbb{R}, a metric on R\mathbb{R} by The Absolute Value Metric on the Real Numbers (i), and read every map from a subset of R\mathbb{R} into R\mathbb{R} as a map from that subset of (R,dR)(\mathbb{R},d_{\mathbb{R}}) into (R,dR)(\mathbb{R},d_{\mathbb{R}}). Let E⊆RE\subseteq\mathbb{R}, let f:E→Rf:E\to\mathbb{R} and let x∈Ex\in E.

ff is continuous at xx relative to EE if and only if for every real ε>0\varepsilon>0 there is a real δ>0\delta>0 such that every y∈Ey\in E with ∣y−x∣<δ|y-x|<\delta satisfies ∣f(y)−f(x)∣<ε|f(y)-f(x)|<\varepsilon.

ff is continuous on EE if and only if for every x′∈Ex'\in E and every real ε>0\varepsilon>0 there is a real δ>0\delta>0 such that every y∈Ey\in E with ∣y−x′∣<δ|y-x'|<\delta satisfies ∣f(y)−f(x′)∣<ε|f(y)-f(x')|<\varepsilon.
