Almost-Everywhere Equality on the p-Integrable Functions

Almost-everywhere equality is an equivalence relation on the p-integrable functions, compatible with sums and scalar multiples, and it preserves the p-seminorm and, for p = 2, the integral of a product.

Statement

In the setting of Measurable Functions and the Lebesgue Integral: Standing Notation, let (X,F,μ)(X,\mathcal{F},\mu) be a measure space and let p≥1p\ge1 be a real number. Lp(μ)\mathcal{L}^{p}(\mu) is the set of pp-integrable functions and ∥f∥p\|f\|_{p}, for f∈Lp(μ)f\in\mathcal{L}^{p}(\mu), is the pp-seminorm. Let ∼\sim be the relation on Lp(μ)\mathcal{L}^{p}(\mu) given by

f∼g  ⟺  f(x)=g(x) for μ-almost every x∈X(f,g∈Lp(μ)).f\sim g\iff f(x)=g(x)\ \text{for $\mu$-almost every }x\in X\qquad(f,g\in\mathcal{L}^{p}(\mu)).

Equivalence relation. ∼\sim is an equivalence relation on Lp(μ)\mathcal{L}^{p}(\mu).

Compatibility with the operations. Let f,f′,g,g′∈Lp(μ)f,f',g,g'\in\mathcal{L}^{p}(\mu) with f∼f′f\sim f' and g∼g′g\sim g', and let c∈Rc\in\mathbb{R}. Then f+g∼f′+g′f+g\sim f'+g' and cf∼cf′cf\sim cf'.

The seminorm. Let f,g∈Lp(μ)f,g\in\mathcal{L}^{p}(\mu) with f∼gf\sim g. Then ∥f∥p=∥g∥p\|f\|_{p}=\|g\|_{p}.

The integral of a product. Suppose that p=2p=2, and let f,f′,g,g′∈L2(μ)f,f',g,g'\in\mathcal{L}^{2}(\mu) with f∼f′f\sim f' and g∼g′g\sim g'. Then fg,f′g′∈L1(μ)fg,f'g'\in\mathcal{L}^{1}(\mu) and

∫fg dμ=∫f′g′ dμ.\int fg\,d\mu=\int f'g'\,d\mu .
