The partition entropy of one probability measure relative to another over a finite measurable partition is the relative entropy of their vectors of cell masses, defined when every cell charged by the first measure is charged by the second.
In the settings of The Real Numbers: Standing Notation and Background and Measure Spaces and the Lebesgue Integral: Standing Notation, the measure space of the latter being instantiated at each use by the measure space named, let be a measurable space, let and be probability measures on it, and let be a finite measurable partition of . Write and for ; these lie in by monotonicity of and , since and . Let . By finite additivity of over the pairwise disjoint cells, . Hence is nonempty, since otherwise every term would vanish and the sum would be ; and as the terms with vanish, . is the natural logarithm.
(Partition entropy) Suppose that for every . The partition entropy of relative to over is the real number
each logarithm being applied to the positive real number , and the sum being over the nonempty finite set .
