A Periodic Potential for a Torus-Cyclically Monotone Set: Lipschitz Periodic Part, Convex Lift and Subgradients

A nonempty torus-cyclically monotone set admits a Lipschitz periodic potential whose difference from half the squared norm is convex, satisfying a one-sided comparison along the set; consequently every nearest lift of the second point of a pair in the set is a subgradient of that convex function at the first point.

Statement

In the setting of The Flat Torus: Standing Notation, used with n=dn=d for a natural number dd with 1≤d1\le d, and of Probability Measures on Euclidean Space and Random Vectors: Standing Notation, let dTd_{\mathbb{T}} be the flat torus distance, Zd\mathbb{Z}^{d} the integer lattice and pr1,pr2\mathrm{pr}_{1},\mathrm{pr}_{2} the coordinate projections of Rd+d\mathbb{R}^{d+d}; for y∈Rdy\in\mathbb{R}^{d} write y+Zd={y+k:k∈Zd}y+\mathbb{Z}^{d}=\{y+k:k\in\mathbb{Z}^{d}\}. Let Γ⊆Rd+d\Gamma\subseteq\mathbb{R}^{d+d} be nonempty and torus-cyclically monotone.

Then there is a function φ:Rd→R\varphi:\mathbb{R}^{d}\to\mathbb{R} such that, with ψ:Rd→R\psi:\mathbb{R}^{d}\to\mathbb{R} given by ψ(x)=12∥x∥2−φ(x)\psi(x)=\tfrac12\lVert x\rVert^{2}-\varphi(x), the following hold.

1. (Periodic Lipschitz part) φ\varphi is Zd\mathbb{Z}^{d}-periodic and Lipschitz with constant d/2\sqrt{d}/2.

2. (Convex lift) ψ\psi is convex on Rd\mathbb{R}^{d}.

3. (Comparison along the set) For every w∈Γw\in\Gamma, with x=pr1(w)x=\mathrm{pr}_{1}(w) and y=pr2(w)y=\mathrm{pr}_{2}(w), and every x′∈Rdx'\in\mathbb{R}^{d},

φ(x′)≤φ(x)+12dT(x′,y)2−12dT(x,y)2.\varphi(x')\le\varphi(x)+\tfrac12 d_{\mathbb{T}}(x',y)^{2}-\tfrac12 d_{\mathbb{T}}(x,y)^{2}.

4. (Nearest lifts are subgradients) For every w∈Γw\in\Gamma, with x=pr1(w)x=\mathrm{pr}_{1}(w) and y=pr2(w)y=\mathrm{pr}_{2}(w), every y~∈y+Zd\tilde y\in y+\mathbb{Z}^{d} with ∥y~−x∥=dT(x,y)\lVert\tilde y-x\rVert=d_{\mathbb{T}}(x,y) belongs to the subdifferential ∂Rdψ(x)\partial_{\mathbb{R}^{d}}\psi(x).
