Tuples in a Set: the Set of n-Tuples and Their Components

For a set X and n in N0N_0, XnX^n is the set of maps from [n] to X, whose elements are n-tuples (x1x_1,...,xn)x_n) with components xkx_k.

Statement

In the setting of The Natural Numbers and the Natural Numbers with Zero: Arithmetic, Order, Induction and Recursion, let XX be a set, let n∈N0n\in\mathbb{N}_{0}, and let [n][n] be as in Intervals of Natural Numbers §segment.

XnX^{n} denotes the set X[n]X^{[n]} of maps from [n][n] to XX; an element of XnX^{n} is an nn-tuple in XX.

For x∈Xnx\in X^{n} and k∈[n]k\in[n], the kk-th component of xx is xk=x(k)x_{k}=x(k), and xx is written (x1,…,xn)(x_{1},\dots,x_{n}); for n=2n=2 this denotes the map xx, not the ordered pair of x1x_{1} and x2x_{2}.
