Supporting Hyperplane of a Subset of Rn\mathbb{R}^n at a Point

A hyperplane supports a subset C of RnR^n at a point x of the closure of C if it passes through x and C lies in its closed half-space a·y ≤ α.

Statement

In the setting of Separation in Rn\mathbb{R}^n: Standing Notation, let C⊆RnC\subseteq\mathbb{R}^{n} and x∈Rnx\in\mathbb{R}^{n}, let a∈Rna\in\mathbb{R}^{n} with a≠0a\neq0 and let α∈R\alpha\in\mathbb{R}, with the hyperplane H(a,α)H(a,\alpha) and its closed half-spaces H≤(a,α)H^{\le}(a,\alpha) and H≥(a,α)H^{\ge}(a,\alpha).

Supporting hyperplane. H(a,α)H(a,\alpha) supports CC at xx if x∈Cx\in C, x∈H(a,α)x\in H(a,\alpha), and C⊆H≤(a,α)C\subseteq H^{\le}(a,\alpha) or C⊆H≥(a,α)C\subseteq H^{\ge}(a,\alpha).
