Predicative Formulas for σ-Algebras, π-Systems and λ-Systems, and the Sets of Them Containing a Given Family

Being a σ-algebra, a π-system or a λ-system on a set X is expressed by a predicative formula, so the σ-algebras, π-systems and λ-systems on X containing a given family of subsets of X each form a set, a subset of the power set of the power set of X.

Statement

In the setting of Routine Facts Used Without Citation: Arithmetic, Maps, Predicativity and Indices; this helper is in part a statement of the metatheory. Conditions expressed by a predicative formula are as in Conditions Expressed by a Predicative Formula, and Guards (ii), with parameters and their fixed values as in Conditions Expressed by a Predicative Formula, and Guards (i). Let XX be a set, let P(X)\mathcal{P}(X) be its power set and P(P(X))\mathcal{P}(\mathcal{P}(X)) the power set of P(X)\mathcal{P}(X), and let C\mathcal{C} be a subset of P(X)\mathcal{P}(X). In each clause, GG is a set variable, and XX and N\mathbb{N} are parameters with the fixed values XX and the set N\mathbb{N} of The Natural Numbers and the Natural Numbers with Zero: Arithmetic, Order, Induction and Recursion (ii).

The condition on GG that GG is a σ\sigma-algebra on XX is expressed by a predicative formula with parameters XX and N\mathbb{N}. There is exactly one set S\mathcal{S} such that, for every set GG, G∈SG\in\mathcal{S} if and only if GG is a σ\sigma-algebra on XX and C⊆G\mathcal{C}\subseteq G; and S⊆P(P(X))\mathcal{S}\subseteq\mathcal{P}(\mathcal{P}(X)).

The condition on GG that GG is a π\pi-system on XX is expressed by a predicative formula with parameter XX. There is exactly one set S\mathcal{S} such that, for every set GG, G∈SG\in\mathcal{S} if and only if GG is a π\pi-system on XX and C⊆G\mathcal{C}\subseteq G; and S⊆P(P(X))\mathcal{S}\subseteq\mathcal{P}(\mathcal{P}(X)).

The condition on GG that GG is a λ\lambda-system on XX is expressed by a predicative formula with parameters XX and N\mathbb{N}. There is exactly one set S\mathcal{S} such that, for every set GG, G∈SG\in\mathcal{S} if and only if GG is a λ\lambda-system on XX and C⊆G\mathcal{C}\subseteq G; and S⊆P(P(X))\mathcal{S}\subseteq\mathcal{P}(\mathcal{P}(X)).
