Functions, Values of a Function, and Functions from One Class to Another

Defines a function as a single-valued relation, its value F(u) at a point u of its domain, and functions (maps) F:A→B from a class A to a class B.

Statement

In the setting of Class Theory NBG: the Axioms, Standing Conventions and Basic Notation, let FF, AA and BB be classes, and let (u,v)(u,v) denote the ordered pair.

FF is a function if FF is a relation and, for all sets uu, vv and v′v', if (u,v)∈F(u,v)\in F and (u,v′)∈F(u,v')\in F then v=v′v=v'.

Let FF be a function and let uu be a set in the domain dom⁡F\operatorname{dom}F. The value of FF at uu, written F(u)F(u), is the unique set vv with (u,v)∈F(u,v)\in F: such a set exists because u∈dom⁡Fu\in\operatorname{dom}F, by Relations, Domain, Range, Inverse and Composition §domain and Class Abstraction: the Class of All Sets Satisfying a Predicative Formula §abstraction, and it is unique by the defining property of a function above. Thus, for u∈dom⁡Fu\in\operatorname{dom}F, F(u)F(u) is the unique set zz satisfying the predicative formula (u,z)∈F(u,z)\in F, in which FF is a class parameter, and it is used as a defined set symbol.

FF is a function from AA to BB, also called a map from AA to BB and written F:A→BF:A\to B, if FF is a function, dom⁡F=A\operatorname{dom}F=A, and the range satisfies ran⁡F⊆B\operatorname{ran}F\subseteq B, where ⊆\subseteq is the subclass relation.
