Subclasses and Subsets

A class X is a subclass of a class Y, written X ⊆ Y, if every element of X is an element of Y; a subclass that is a set is a subset.

Statement

Let XX and YY be classes.

XX is a subclass of YY, written X⊆YX\subseteq Y, if every element of XX is an element of YY; this is the defined predicate abbreviating ∀u (u∈X⇒u∈Y)\forall u\,(u\in X\Rightarrow u\in Y), with uu a set variable, which expresses the same thing because every element of a class is a set by Elements Are Sets, and the Empty Set and the Pair of Two Sets Exist and Are Unique §elements. When XX is a set, XX is also called a subset of YY.
