Counting Surjections and Derangements

Inclusion and exclusion gives alternating-sum formulas for the number of surjections from [n] onto [k] and for the number of permutations of [n] without fixed points.

Statement

In the setting of Finite Combinatorics: Notation, let n∈N0n\in\mathbb{N}_{0}.

Surjections. For every k∈N0k\in\mathbb{N}_{0},

#Surj⁡([n],[k])=∑j=0k(−1)j(kj)(k−j)n.\#\operatorname{Surj}([n],[k])=\sum_{j=0}^{k}(-1)^{j}\binom{k}{j}(k-j)^{n}.

Derangements.

#Dn=∑j=0n(−1)j(nj)(n−j)!.\#D_{n}=\sum_{j=0}^{n}(-1)^{j}\binom{n}{j}(n-j)!.

Derangements as a truncated exponential series.

#Dn=n!∑j=0n(−1)jj!.\#D_{n}=n!\sum_{j=0}^{n}\frac{(-1)^{j}}{j!}.
