Support of a Real Function on a Metric Space

The support of a real function on a metric space is the closure of the set where it is nonzero; the function has compact support when this closure is compact.

Statement

In the setting of Locally Compact Metric Spaces and Compactly Supported Functions: Standing Notation, let (X,d)(X,d) be a metric space and let f:X→Rf:X\to\mathbb{R} be a function.

Support. The support of ff is the closure

supp⁡f=cl⁡{x∈X:f(x)≠0}.\operatorname{supp}f=\operatorname{cl}\{x\in X:f(x)\neq0\}.

Compact support. ff has compact support if supp⁡f\operatorname{supp}f is compact.
