The Structure of ℝ as a Field and an Ordered Ring

The real numbers form a field and an ordered ring, their order is a partial order, multiplication is associative and commutative, 0 is a neutral element of addition, x < y implies x ≤ y, (x − y) + y = x and x2x^2 = x · x.

Statement

This helper adopts the setting of The Real Numbers, with the Natural Numbers, Integers and Rationals Identified with Subsets of the Reals, and Completeness: R\mathbb{R}, its order ≤\le, its operations ++ and ⋅\cdot, and its elements 00 and 11 are as in The Real Numbers, with the Natural Numbers, Integers and Rationals Identified with Subsets of the Reals, and Completeness §reals.

R\mathbb{R}, with ++, ⋅\cdot, 00 and 11, is a field.

R\mathbb{R}, with ++, ⋅\cdot, 00, 11 and ≤\le, is an ordered ring.

≤\le is a partial order on R\mathbb{R}.

The binary operation ⋅\cdot on R\mathbb{R} is associative.

The binary operation ⋅\cdot on R\mathbb{R} is commutative.

00 is a neutral element of the binary operation ++ on R\mathbb{R}.

For all real numbers xx and yy: if x<yx<y, where << is the strict relation associated with ≤\le, then x≤yx\le y.

For all real numbers xx and yy, (x−y)+y=x(x-y)+y=x, where x−yx-y is the difference of xx and yy.

For every real number xx, x2=x⋅xx^{2}=x\cdot x, where x2x^{2} is the power of xx for ⋅\cdot with exponent the digit 22, read in N0\mathbb{N}_{0} as an exponent by Commutative Rings, Fields and Ordered Fields: Standard Notation §numerals.
