A Point Outside the Interior of a Closed Convex Subset of Rn\mathbb{R}^n Has a Supporting Unit Normal

If C is a closed convex subset of RnR^n and x is not an interior point of C, some unit vector a satisfies a·z ≤ a·x for every z in C.

Statement

In the setting of Separation in Rn\mathbb{R}^n: Standing Notation, let C⊆RnC\subseteq\mathbb{R}^{n} be closed and convex, and let x∈Rnx\in\mathbb{R}^{n} with x∉int⁡Cx\notin\operatorname{int}C.

Unit normal. There is a∈Sa\in\mathbb{S} with

a⋅z≤a⋅xfor every z∈C.a\cdot z\le a\cdot x\qquad\text{for every }z\in C.
