Convergence in Distribution through Expectations of Bounded Continuous and of Bounded Lipschitz Functions

Random elements of a metric space, possibly on different probability spaces, converge in distribution exactly when the expectations of every bounded continuous function of them converge, and exactly when this holds for every bounded Lipschitz function.

Statement

In the setting of Convergence of Probability Measures and Random Elements: Standing Notation, for each n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N} let XnX_{n} be a random element of SS on a probability space (Ωn,Fn,Pn)(\Omega_{n},\mathcal{F}_{n},P_{n}), with En\mathbb{E}_{n} the expectation there, and let XX be a random element of SS on (Ω,F,P)(\Omega,\mathcal{F},P). For f∈Cb(S)f\in C_{b}(S) the random variables f(Xn)f(X_{n}) and f(X)f(X) are integrable (Bounded Continuous Functions on a Metric Space: Measurability, Integrals, Operations, Lipschitz Functions and Approximation of Closed Sets (i), Bounded Continuous Functions on a Metric Space: Measurability, Integrals, Operations, Lipschitz Functions and Approximation of Closed Sets (ii), Expectations Computed from the Law (ii)).

Bounded continuous functions. Xn→dXX_{n}\xrightarrow{d}X if and only if

Enf(Xn)→Ef(X)(n→∞)\mathbb{E}_{n}f(X_{n})\to\mathbb{E}f(X)\qquad(n\to\infty)

for every f∈Cb(S)f\in C_{b}(S).

Bounded Lipschitz functions. Xn→dXX_{n}\xrightarrow{d}X if and only if Enf(Xn)→Ef(X)\mathbb{E}_{n}f(X_{n})\to\mathbb{E}f(X) for every bounded Lipschitz function f:S→Rf:S\to\mathbb{R}, which lies in Cb(S)C_{b}(S) by Bounded Continuous Functions on a Metric Space: Measurability, Integrals, Operations, Lipschitz Functions and Approximation of Closed Sets (vi).
