Thickenings, Neighbourhoods with Compact Closure, Urysohn Functions and Partitions of Unity in a Locally Compact Metric Space

In a locally compact metric space, a compact set inside an open set has a compact closed thickening and an open neighbourhood with compact closure inside the open set, and a continuous compactly supported function with values in [0,1] that is 1 on the compact set and supported in the open set; a compact set covered by finitely many open sets carries a subordinate partition of unity.

Statement

In the setting of Locally Compact Metric Spaces and Compactly Supported Functions: Standing Notation, let (X,d)(X,d) be a locally compact metric space and let K⊆XK\subseteq X be compact. Let V⊆XV\subseteq X be open with K⊆VK\subseteq V.

Compact thickening. If K≠∅K\neq\emptyset, there is a real number δ>0\delta>0 such that the set

{x∈X:dist⁡(x,K)≤δ}\{x\in X:\operatorname{dist}(x,K)\le\delta\}

is compact and contained in VV.

Compact neighbourhood. There is an open set W⊆XW\subseteq X with K⊆WK\subseteq W, cl⁡W\operatorname{cl}W compact and cl⁡W⊆V\operatorname{cl}W\subseteq V.

Urysohn function. There is a function ff in Cc(X)C_{c}(X) with 0≤f(x)≤10\le f(x)\le1 for every x∈Xx\in X, f(x)=1f(x)=1 for every x∈Kx\in K, and support supp⁡f⊆V\operatorname{supp}f\subseteq V.

Partition of unity. Let n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N} and let V1,…,Vn⊆XV_{1},\dots,V_{n}\subseteq X be open with K⊆V1∪⋯∪VnK\subseteq V_{1}\cup\dots\cup V_{n}. Then there are h1,…,hn∈Cc(X)h_{1},\dots,h_{n}\in C_{c}(X) with 0≤hi(x)≤10\le h_{i}(x)\le1 for every x∈Xx\in X and supp⁡hi⊆Vi\operatorname{supp}h_{i}\subseteq V_{i}, for every i∈[n]i\in[n], and

∑i=1nhi(x)≤1(x∈X),∑i=1nhi(x)=1(x∈K).\sum_{i=1}^{n}h_{i}(x)\le1\quad(x\in X),\qquad\sum_{i=1}^{n}h_{i}(x)=1\quad(x\in K).
