The Quotient 1/x, Order Rules for Sums, and Nesting of Closed Intervals in ℝ

For real numbers: 1/x is the reciprocal of x when x is nonzero, 1 ≤ p implies 0 < p, sums of nonnegative numbers are nonnegative, adding a nonnegative number or adding on the left preserves ≤, and [c,d] lies in [a,b] when a ≤ c and d ≤ b.

Statement

This helper adopts the setting of The Real Numbers, with the Natural Numbers, Integers and Rationals Identified with Subsets of the Reals, and Completeness: R\mathbb{R}, its order ≤\le, its operations ++ and ⋅\cdot, and its elements 00 and 11 are as in The Real Numbers, with the Natural Numbers, Integers and Rationals Identified with Subsets of the Reals, and Completeness (ii), and << is the strict relation of ≤\le. Let xx, yy, zz, pp, aa, bb, cc and dd be real numbers.

If x≠0x\neq0, then the quotient 1/x1/x equals the reciprocal x−1x^{-1}.

If 1≤p1\le p, then 0<p0<p.

If 0≤x0\le x and 0≤y0\le y, then 0≤x+y0\le x+y.

If 0≤y0\le y, then x≤x+yx\le x+y.

If x≤yx\le y, then z+x≤z+yz+x\le z+y.

If a≤ca\le c and d≤bd\le b, then the closed intervals satisfy [c,d]⊆[a,b][c,d]\subseteq[a,b].
