The Integral of |x| exp(−ax²/2) over ℝ

For every real a > 0 the function |x| exp(−ax²/2) is Lebesgue integrable on the real line, with integral 2/a.

Statement

In the setting of Lebesgue Measure on the Real Line: Standing Notation, let exp⁡\exp be the exponential function, let a>0a>0 be a real number, and let ha:R→Rh_{a}:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R} be the function ha(x)=∣x∣exp⁡(−ax2/2)h_{a}(x)=|x|\exp(-ax^{2}/2).

The integral. ha∈M+(R,B(R))h_{a}\in\mathcal{M}^{+}(\mathbb{R},\mathcal{B}(\mathbb{R})), and its integral is

∫R∣x∣exp⁡(−ax2/2) dλ(x)=2a.\int_{\mathbb{R}}|x|\exp(-ax^{2}/2)\,d\lambda(x)=\frac{2}{a}.

Integrability. ha∈L1(λ)h_{a}\in\mathcal{L}^{1}(\lambda).
