The Borel Sets of ℝⁿ and of the Real Matrices Are Generated by the Coordinates

Every open subset of ℝⁿ is a countable union of open boxes with rational endpoints contained in it, and the Borel σ-algebras of ℝⁿ and of the real p×q matrices are generated by the preimages of Borel subsets of ℝ under the coordinate maps and the entry maps.

Statement

In the settings of Measure Spaces, Borel Sets and Lebesgue Measure on the Real Line: Standing Notation and Euclidean Space and Real Matrices: Standing Notation, let n,p,q∈Nn,p,q\in\mathbb{N}. Rn\mathbb{R}^{n} carries the Euclidean distance dEd_{E} and Mp×q(R)=Rp×q\mathcal{M}_{p\times q}(\mathbb{R})=\mathbb{R}^{p\times q} the distance dp×qd_{p\times q}, as in Euclidean Space and Real Matrices: Standing Notation (ii) and Euclidean Space and Real Matrices: Standing Notation (vi); B(R)\mathcal{B}(\mathbb{R}), B(Rn)\mathcal{B}(\mathbb{R}^{n}) and B(Rp×q)\mathcal{B}(\mathbb{R}^{p\times q}) are the Borel σ\sigma-algebras of Borel Sigma-Algebra of a Metric Space (ii), Borel Sigma-Algebra of a Metric Space (iii) and Borel Sigma-Algebra of a Metric Space (iv). For i∈[n]i\in[n], πi:Rn→R\pi_{i}:\mathbb{R}^{n}\to\mathbb{R} is the ii-th component map of the identity idRn\mathrm{id}_{\mathbb{R}^{n}}, so πi(x)=xi\pi_{i}(x)=x_{i}; for i∈[p]i\in[p] and j∈[q]j\in[q], Eij:Rp×q→RE_{ij}:\mathbb{R}^{p\times q}\to\mathbb{R} is the entry map of idRp×q\mathrm{id}_{\mathbb{R}^{p\times q}} in row ii and column jj, so Eij(A)=AijE_{ij}(A)=A_{ij}. Qn\mathbb{Q}^{n} is the set of nn-tuples in Q\mathbb{Q}, whose components are read as real numbers as in The Real Numbers, with the Natural Numbers, Integers and Rationals Identified with Subsets of the Reals, and Completeness (v); for a,b∈Qna,b\in\mathbb{Q}^{n}, the rational open box

R(a,b)={x∈Rn:ai<xi<bi for every i∈[n]}R(a,b)=\{x\in\mathbb{R}^{n}:a_{i}<x_{i}<b_{i}\text{ for every }i\in[n]\}

is a subset of Rn\mathbb{R}^{n}. Likewise (Qq)p(\mathbb{Q}^{q})^{p} is the set of pp-tuples in Qq\mathbb{Q}^{q}; for a∈(Qq)pa\in(\mathbb{Q}^{q})^{p}, i∈[p]i\in[p] and j∈[q]j\in[q], aija_{ij} is the jj-th component of the ii-th component ai∈Qqa_{i}\in\mathbb{Q}^{q} of aa, read as a real number; and for a,b∈(Qq)pa,b\in(\mathbb{Q}^{q})^{p}, the rational open entry box

R′(a,b)={A∈Rp×q:aij<Aij<bij for all i∈[p], j∈[q]}R'(a,b)=\{A\in\mathbb{R}^{p\times q}:a_{ij}<A_{ij}<b_{ij}\text{ for all }i\in[p],\ j\in[q]\}

is a subset of Rp×q\mathbb{R}^{p\times q}.

For every subset UU of Rn\mathbb{R}^{n} that is open in (Rn,dE)(\mathbb{R}^{n},d_{E}) there is a sequence (Wk)k∈N(W_{k})_{k\in\mathbb{N}} of subsets of Rn\mathbb{R}^{n} with U=⋃k∈NWkU=\bigcup_{k\in\mathbb{N}}W_{k} such that, for every k∈Nk\in\mathbb{N}, Wk⊆UW_{k}\subseteq U and Wk=R(a,b)W_{k}=R(a,b) for some a,b∈Qna,b\in\mathbb{Q}^{n}.

For every subset UU of Rp×q\mathbb{R}^{p\times q} that is open in (Rp×q,dp×q)(\mathbb{R}^{p\times q},d_{p\times q}) there is a sequence (Wk)k∈N(W_{k})_{k\in\mathbb{N}} of subsets of Rp×q\mathbb{R}^{p\times q} with U=⋃k∈NWkU=\bigcup_{k\in\mathbb{N}}W_{k} such that, for every k∈Nk\in\mathbb{N}, Wk⊆UW_{k}\subseteq U and Wk=R′(a,b)W_{k}=R'(a,b) for some a,b∈(Qq)pa,b\in(\mathbb{Q}^{q})^{p}.

B(Rn)=σ({πi−1(B):i∈[n], B∈B(R)})\mathcal{B}(\mathbb{R}^{n})=\sigma(\{\pi_{i}^{-1}(B):i\in[n],\ B\in\mathcal{B}(\mathbb{R})\}).

B(Rp×q)=σ({Eij−1(B):i∈[p], j∈[q], B∈B(R)})\mathcal{B}(\mathbb{R}^{p\times q})=\sigma(\{E_{ij}^{-1}(B):i\in[p],\ j\in[q],\ B\in\mathcal{B}(\mathbb{R})\}).
