The Riesz–Markov Representation Theorem on a Locally Compact Metric Space

Every positive linear functional on Cc(X)C_c(X), X a locally compact metric space, is integration against a unique Radon measure; when the functional is bounded for the uniform norm, the measure is finite and its total mass equals the dual norm.

Statement

In the setting of The Dual of C_c(X): Standing Notation, let (X,d)(X,d) be a locally compact metric space and let Λ\Lambda be a positive linear functional on Cc(X)C_{c}(X).

Existence. There is a Radon measure μ\mu on XX with

Λf=∫Xf dμ(f∈Cc(X)),\Lambda f=\int_{X}f\,d\mu\qquad(f\in C_{c}(X)),

the integrals existing by Radon Measures and Finite Signed Borel Measures Are Determined by Their Integrals of Compactly Supported Continuous Functions (i).

Uniqueness. If μ\mu and μ′\mu' are Radon measures on XX that both satisfy the identity of (i), then μ(B)=μ′(B)\mu(B)=\mu'(B) for every B∈B(X)B\in\mathcal{B}(X).

Bounded functionals. If moreover Λ\Lambda is bounded, that is Λ∈Cc(X)∗\Lambda\in C_{c}(X)^{*}, then the Radon measure μ\mu of (i) is finite, and

μ(X)=sup⁡{Λf:f∈Cc(X), 0≤f≤1}=∥Λ∥∗.\mu(X)=\sup\{\Lambda f:f\in C_{c}(X),\ 0\le f\le1\}=\|\Lambda\|_{*}.
