Rotations and Cyclic Derivatives of Words in Unitary Letters

The i-th cyclic derivative of a word is the word polynomial summing, over the occurrences of the i-th unitary or its inverse, the rotation of the word starting at the insertion point, with coefficient i times the sign of the letter.

Statement

Let N\mathbb{N} be the natural numbers, for k∈Nk\in\mathbb{N} let [k][k] be the initial segment determined by kk, and let d∈Nd\in\mathbb{N}. Let W2dW_{2d}, with concatenation (u,v)↦uv(u,v)\mapsto uv, and the generators g(l)g(l) and signs ε(l)\varepsilon(l) of letters be as in Words in Unitary Letters: Generators, Signs, Inverse Letters, Lengths and Adjoint Words; for a word ww of length kk and a,b∈[k]a,b\in[k] with a≤ba\le b, w[a,b]w_{[a,b]} is the word wawa+1⋯wbw_{a}w_{a+1}\cdots w_{b} of The Free Unitary Heat Generator on Unitary Laws. Let word polynomials, the word polynomials ewe_{w}, and pointwise sums and complex multiples be as in Word Polynomials in Unitary Letters: the Normed *-Algebra of Finitely Supported Word Functions; a sum of finitely many word polynomials is a word polynomial, with the union of their support sets as support set, finite by Sums over Finite Index Sets: Finite Unions, Disjoint Unions, Vanishing Terms, Dependent Pairs, Conjugation and the Modulus §finite-union, and a sum over the empty index set is the zero word polynomial 00, which has every nonempty finite subset of W2dW_{2d} as a support set. Let C\mathbb{C} be the complex numbers with imaginary unit i\mathrm{i}.

1. (Rotations) Let ww be a word of length k∈Nk\in\mathbb{N} and m∈[k]m\in[k]. If ε(wm)=1\varepsilon(w_{m})=1, the rotation of ww at mm is rm(w)=wr_{m}(w)=w when m=1m=1 and rm(w)=w[m,k] w[1,m−1]r_{m}(w)=w_{[m,k]}\,w_{[1,m-1]} when 1<m1<m. If ε(wm)=−1\varepsilon(w_{m})=-1, it is rm(w)=wr_{m}(w)=w when m=km=k and rm(w)=w[m+1,k] w[1,m]r_{m}(w)=w_{[m+1,k]}\,w_{[1,m]} when m<km<k. Here m−1m-1 and m+1m+1 lie in [k][k] in the respective cases, as in The Free Unitary Heat Generator on Unitary Laws.

2. (Cyclic derivatives) For j∈[d]j\in[d], the jj-th cyclic derivative of ∅\varnothing is D∅j=0D^{j}_{\varnothing}=0, and that of a word ww of length k∈Nk\in\mathbb{N} is the word polynomial

Dwj=∑m∈[k], g(wm)=ji ε(wm) erm(w).D^{j}_{w}=\sum_{m\in[k],\ g(w_{m})=j}\mathrm{i}\,\varepsilon(w_{m})\,e_{r_{m}(w)}.
