Rank of a Real Matrix: Rank–Nullity, Invertibility and the Size Bound

For a real m x n matrix A, the rank and the dimension of the kernel of x -> Ax add up to n; a square matrix is invertible exactly when its rank is n; and the rank is at most min(m, n).

Statement

In the setting of Euclidean Space and Real Matrices: Standing Notation (Algebra) and Linear Algebra: Standing Notation, let m,n∈Nm,n\in\mathbb{N}, let A∈Mm×n(R)A\in\mathcal{M}_{m\times n}(\mathbb{R}) be a real matrix (so LAL_{A} is linear by Real Matrices and Linear Maps between Euclidean Spaces (i)), and let rank⁡A\operatorname{rank}A be the rank of AA.

Rank–nullity. ker⁡LA\ker L_{A} is a finite-dimensional subspace of Rn\mathbb{R}^{n}, and

rank⁡A+dim⁡ker⁡LA=n.\operatorname{rank}A+\dim\ker L_{A}=n.

Invertibility. If m=nm=n, then AA is invertible if and only if rank⁡A=n\operatorname{rank}A=n.

Size bound.

rank⁡A≤min⁡(m,n).\operatorname{rank}A\le\min(m,n).
