Strong Separation of a Point from a Closed Convex Subset of Rn\mathbb{R}^n

A point outside a closed convex subset C of RnR^n is strongly separated from C by a hyperplane, with normal x − p for the nearest point p when C is nonempty.

Statement

In the setting of Separation in Rn\mathbb{R}^n: Standing Notation, let C⊆RnC\subseteq\mathbb{R}^{n} be closed and convex, and let x∈Rn∖Cx\in\mathbb{R}^{n}\setminus C.

Separating inequality. There is a∈Rna\in\mathbb{R}^{n} with a≠0a\neq0 such that

a⋅y≤a⋅x−∥a∥2<a⋅xfor every y∈C.a\cdot y\le a\cdot x-\lVert a\rVert^{2}<a\cdot x\qquad\text{for every }y\in C.

Strong separation. For every aa as in (i), the hyperplane H(a,α)H(a,\alpha) with α=a⋅x−12∥a∥2\alpha=a\cdot x-\tfrac{1}{2}\lVert a\rVert^{2} strongly separates CC and {x}\{x\}.
