Borel Sets of a Hilbert Space with an Orthonormal Basis: Coordinates, Determination by Finite-Dimensional Projections, and Pairs

On a Hilbert space with an orthonormal basis, the coordinates generate the Borel sets, measurability can be tested coordinatewise, finite measures are determined by their finite-dimensional projections, and the Borel sets of the square are the product sigma-algebra.

Statement

In the setting of Borel Probability Measures on a Real Hilbert Space with an Orthonormal Basis: Standing Notation, with the coordinates xkx_{k}, the maps pn,pn∗,Pn,Qnp_{n},p_{n}^{*},P_{n},Q_{n} of Borel Probability Measures on a Real Hilbert Space with an Orthonormal Basis: Standing Notation §coordinates and the pairs of Borel Probability Measures on a Real Hilbert Space with an Orthonormal Basis: Standing Notation §pairs, the following hold.

1. (Coordinate maps) For all n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N}, x,x′∈Xx,x'\in X and y∈Rny\in\mathbb{R}^{n}: pn(pn∗(y))=yp_{n}(p_{n}^{*}(y))=y, ∣pn∗(y)∣=∥y∥|p_{n}^{*}(y)|=\lVert y\rVert, ∣Pnx∣=∥pn(x)∥|P_{n}x|=\lVert p_{n}(x)\rVert, ∣x∣2=∣Pnx∣2+∣Qnx∣2|x|^{2}=|P_{n}x|^{2}+|Q_{n}x|^{2}, and ∥pn(x)−pn(x′)∥≤∣x−x′∣\lVert p_{n}(x)-p_{n}(x')\rVert\le|x-x'|. Consequently each coordinate function x↦xkx\mapsto x_{k}, as a map into (R,dR)(\mathbb{R},d_{\mathbb{R}}), the maps pn:(X,d)→(Rn,dE)p_{n}:(X,d)\to(\mathbb{R}^{n},d_{E}) and pn∗:(Rn,dE)→(X,d)p_{n}^{*}:(\mathbb{R}^{n},d_{E})\to(X,d), with dEd_{E} as in Borel Probability Measures on a Real Hilbert Space with an Orthonormal Basis: Standing Notation §coordinates, and the maps Pn,Qn:(X,d)→(X,d)P_{n},Q_{n}:(X,d)\to(X,d), are Lipschitz with constant 11, hence Borel; in particular ∣Qnx∣≤∣x∣|Q_{n}x|\le|x|.

2. (Generation) B(X)\mathcal{B}(X) is the σ\sigma-algebra generated by the sets {x∈X:xk<s}\{x\in X:x_{k}<s\} with k∈Nk\in\mathbb{N} and s∈Rs\in\mathbb{R}.

3. (Measurability by coordinates) Let (Ω,F)(\Omega,\mathcal{F}) be a measurable space and Y:Ω→XY:\Omega\to X. Then YY is measurable with respect to F\mathcal{F} and B(X)\mathcal{B}(X) if and only if, for every k∈Nk\in\mathbb{N}, the function ω↦⟨Y(ω),ek⟩\omega\mapsto\langle Y(\omega),e_{k}\rangle is measurable with respect to F\mathcal{F} and the Borel σ\sigma-algebra B(R)\mathcal{B}(\mathbb{R}) of the real line, which is that of (R,dR)(\mathbb{R},d_{\mathbb{R}}) by claim 2 of Borel Measurability and Bounded Integration on a Metric Space.

4. (Determination by finite-dimensional projections) Let μ,ν\mu,\nu be Borel measures on (X,d)(X,d) with μ(X)=ν(X)<∞\mu(X)=\nu(X)<\infty and (pn)#μ=(pn)#ν(p_{n})_{\#}\mu=(p_{n})_{\#}\nu for every n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N}. Then μ=ν\mu=\nu.

5. (Product σ\sigma-algebra) B(X×X)\mathcal{B}(X\times X) is the product σ\sigma-algebra B(X)⊗B(X)\mathcal{B}(X)\otimes\mathcal{B}(X), and π1,π2\pi_{1},\pi_{2} are Borel.

6. (Pairing) For a measurable space (Ω,F)(\Omega,\mathcal{F}) and maps S,T:Ω→XS,T:\Omega\to X measurable with respect to F\mathcal{F} and B(X)\mathcal{B}(X), the map (S,T)(S,T) is measurable with respect to F\mathcal{F} and B(X×X)\mathcal{B}(X\times X).

7. (Product measure) For Borel measures μ,ν\mu,\nu on (X,d)(X,d) of finite total mass, which are σ\sigma-finite, the product measure μ⊗ν\mu\otimes\nu is a Borel measure on X×XX\times X with (π1)#(μ⊗ν)=ν(X) μ(\pi_{1})_{\#}(\mu\otimes\nu)=\nu(X)\,\mu and (π2)#(μ⊗ν)=μ(X) ν(\pi_{2})_{\#}(\mu\otimes\nu)=\mu(X)\,\nu.
