Lines, Scalar Multiples, Basis Directions, Small Balls and Matrix Rows in ℝⁿ

Rules for points x + th on a line in ℝⁿ, for multiples of standard basis vectors, for small displacements inside an open set, and for a coordinate of a matrix-vector product as a dot product with a row.

Statement

In the setting of Euclidean Space and Real Matrices: Standing Notation, let n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N}, x,y,h,w∈Rnx,y,h,w\in\mathbb{R}^{n}, s,t∈Rs,t\in\mathbb{R} and i∈[n]i\in[n], with the operations of Euclidean Space Rn\mathbb{R}^n: n-Tuples of Real Numbers with Their Componentwise Operations (iv) on Rn\mathbb{R}^{n}, the Euclidean norm ∥⋅∥\lVert\cdot\rVert, the dot product ⋅\cdot, the Euclidean distance dEd_{E} and the ii-th standard basis vector eie_{i}.

Zero multiple. x+0h=xx+0h=x.

Unit multiple. 1h=h1h=h.

Moving along a line.

(x+sh)+th=x+(s+t)h.(x+sh)+th=x+(s+t)h .

Differences along a line.

(x+sh)−(x+th)=(s−t)h.(x+sh)-(x+th)=(s-t)h .

Multiples of differences. t(x−y)=tx−tyt(x-y)=tx-ty.

Segments as lines.

(1−t)x+t(x+h)=x+th.(1-t)x+t(x+h)=x+th .

Length of a basis multiple. ∥tei∥=∣t∣\lVert te_{i}\rVert=|t|.

Dot product with a basis multiple. w⋅(tei)=t wiw\cdot(te_{i})=t\,w_{i}.

Distance along a line.

dE(x,x+th)=∣t∣ ∥h∥.d_{E}(x,x+th)=|t|\,\lVert h\rVert .

Small displacements stay in an open set. If U⊆RnU\subseteq\mathbb{R}^{n} is open and a∈Ua\in U, there is a real r>0r>0 such that a+v∈Ua+v\in U for every v∈Rnv\in\mathbb{R}^{n} with ∥v∥<r\lVert v\rVert<r.

Small steps along a coordinate axis. If U⊆RnU\subseteq\mathbb{R}^{n} is open and a∈Ua\in U, there is a real r>0r>0 such that a+uei∈Ua+ue_{i}\in U for every real uu with ∣u∣<r|u|<r.

Coordinates of a matrix-vector product. Let m∈Nm\in\mathbb{N}, let A∈Mm×n(R)A\in\mathcal{M}_{m\times n}(\mathbb{R}) and let k∈[m]k\in[m]. There is a point ρ∈Rn\rho\in\mathbb{R}^{n} with ρj=Akj\rho_{j}=A_{kj} for every j∈[n]j\in[n], and every such ρ\rho satisfies, for the matrix-vector product,

(Av)k=ρ⋅vfor every v∈Rn.(Av)_{k}=\rho\cdot v\qquad\text{for every }v\in\mathbb{R}^{n}.
