Closure and Interior in a Metric Space: Containments, the Closure is Closed, the Interior is Open

For a subset A of a metric space, int A is contained in A and A in cl A; cl A is closed and int A is open; A is closed exactly when cl A = A and open exactly when int A = A.

Statement

In the setting of Metric Spaces: Balls, the Metric Topology, and the Real and Complex Numbers as Metric Spaces and Routine Facts, Continued: Typed Arithmetic, Maps and Predicativity, let (X,d)(X,d) be a metric space and let A⊆XA\subseteq X, with closure cl⁡A\operatorname{cl}A and interior int⁡A\operatorname{int}A.

Containments.

int⁡A⊆A⊆cl⁡A.\operatorname{int}A\subseteq A\subseteq\operatorname{cl}A.

The closure is closed. cl⁡A\operatorname{cl}A is closed in (X,Td)(X,\mathcal{T}_{d}).

The interior is open. int⁡A\operatorname{int}A is open in (X,d)(X,d).

Closed sets. AA is closed in (X,Td)(X,\mathcal{T}_{d}) if and only if cl⁡A=A\operatorname{cl}A=A.

Open sets. AA is open in (X,d)(X,d) if and only if int⁡A=A\operatorname{int}A=A.
