Couplings on a Hilbert Space: Product Coupling, Swap, Finiteness of the Cost, Push-Forward Couplings, Modifying One Marginal, Quantisation, Gluing over a Finitely Supported Measure, the Lipschitz Bound and the Moment Bound

Basic operations on couplings over a Hilbert space: product coupling, swap, finiteness of the cost, push-forward couplings, changing one marginal, quantisation onto finitely many points, gluing over a finitely supported measure, and Lipschitz and moment bounds.

Statement

In the setting of Borel Probability Measures on a Real Hilbert Space with an Orthonormal Basis: Standing Notation, let μ,ν∈P(X)\mu,\nu\in\mathcal{P}(X). Couplings, the sets Π(μ,ν)\Pi(\mu,\nu) and the quadratic cost I(π)I(\pi) are those of that definition, and the second moment M2M_{2} and the set P2(X)\mathcal{P}_{2}(X) of probability measures with finite second moment are those of that definition. For Borel S,T:X→XS,T:X\to X the function x↦∣S(x)−T(x)∣2x\mapsto|S(x)-T(x)|^{2} is Borel, by Borel Sets of a Hilbert Space with an Orthonormal Basis: Coordinates, Determination by Finite-Dimensional Projections, and Pairs §pairing and claims 3 and 4 of Borel Measurability and Bounded Integration on a Metric Space, so its integral against any member of P(X)\mathcal{P}(X) is defined in [0,∞][0,\infty]. A finite set F⊆XF\subseteq X is closed in (X,d)(X,d), since every x∈X∖Fx\in X\setminus F has an open ball about it of radius 11 (if FF is empty) or of radius the least of the distances d(x,a)d(x,a), a∈Fa\in F, which misses FF; hence FF and X∖FX\setminus F are Borel by claim 1 of Borel Measurability and Bounded Integration on a Metric Space. A function f:X→Rf:X\to\mathbb{R} is Lipschitz with constant LL, for real L≥0L\ge0, if ∣f(x)−f(y)∣≤L∣x−y∣|f(x)-f(y)|\le L|x-y| for all x,y∈Xx,y\in X, which is the notion of Lipschitz Map Between Metric Spaces for the distance dd and the absolute-value metric. Square roots are the nonnegative square roots of Existence and Uniqueness of the Nonnegative Square Root, and idX\mathrm{id}_{X} is the identity map of XX. Then the following hold.

1. (Product coupling) The product measure μ⊗ν\mu\otimes\nu belongs to Π(μ,ν)\Pi(\mu,\nu); in particular Π(μ,ν)\Pi(\mu,\nu) is nonempty.

2. (Swap) Let σ:X×X→X×X\sigma:X\times X\to X\times X be the swap σ(x,y)=(y,x)\sigma(x,y)=(y,x), which is Borel by Borel Sets of a Hilbert Space with an Orthonormal Basis: Coordinates, Determination by Finite-Dimensional Projections, and Pairs §pairing, since σ=(π2,π1)\sigma=(\pi_{2},\pi_{1}). For every π∈Π(μ,ν)\pi\in\Pi(\mu,\nu) one has σ#π∈Π(ν,μ)\sigma_{\#}\pi\in\Pi(\nu,\mu), σ#(σ#π)=π\sigma_{\#}(\sigma_{\#}\pi)=\pi and I(σ#π)=I(π)I(\sigma_{\#}\pi)=I(\pi).

3. (Finiteness of the cost) If μ,ν∈P2(X)\mu,\nu\in\mathcal{P}_{2}(X), then every π∈Π(μ,ν)\pi\in\Pi(\mu,\nu) satisfies I(π)≤2M2(μ)+2M2(ν)<∞I(\pi)\le2M_{2}(\mu)+2M_{2}(\nu)<\infty. Conversely, if μ∈P2(X)\mu\in\mathcal{P}_{2}(X) and some π∈Π(μ,ν)\pi\in\Pi(\mu,\nu) has I(π)<∞I(\pi)<\infty, then ν∈P2(X)\nu\in\mathcal{P}_{2}(X) and M2(ν)≤2M2(μ)+2I(π)M_{2}(\nu)\le2M_{2}(\mu)+2I(\pi).

4. (Push-forward couplings) Let S,T:X→XS,T:X\to X be Borel. Then (S,T)#μ∈Π(S#μ,T#μ)(S,T)_{\#}\mu\in\Pi(S_{\#}\mu,T_{\#}\mu) and

I((S,T)#μ)=∫X∣S(x)−T(x)∣2 μ(dx).I\bigl((S,T)_{\#}\mu\bigr)=\int_{X}|S(x)-T(x)|^{2}\,\mu(dx).

In particular (idX,idX)#μ∈Π(μ,μ)(\mathrm{id}_{X},\mathrm{id}_{X})_{\#}\mu\in\Pi(\mu,\mu) has quadratic cost 00.

5. (Modifying one marginal) Let π∈Π(μ,ν)\pi\in\Pi(\mu,\nu) and let S,T:X→XS,T:X\to X be Borel. Then π′=(π1,T∘π2)#π∈Π(μ,T#ν)\pi'=(\pi_{1},T\circ\pi_{2})_{\#}\pi\in\Pi(\mu,T_{\#}\nu) and π′′=(S∘π1,π2)#π∈Π(S#μ,ν)\pi''=(S\circ\pi_{1},\pi_{2})_{\#}\pi\in\Pi(S_{\#}\mu,\nu). If moreover I(π)<∞I(\pi)<\infty and ∫X∣T(y)−y∣2 ν(dy)<∞\int_{X}|T(y)-y|^{2}\,\nu(dy)<\infty, then I(π′)<∞I(\pi')<\infty and

I(π′)≤I(π)+∫X∣T(y)−y∣2 ν(dy) ;\sqrt{I(\pi')}\le\sqrt{I(\pi)}+\sqrt{\int_{X}|T(y)-y|^{2}\,\nu(dy)}\ ;

likewise, if I(π)<∞I(\pi)<\infty and ∫X∣S(x)−x∣2 μ(dx)<∞\int_{X}|S(x)-x|^{2}\,\mu(dx)<\infty, then I(π′′)<∞I(\pi'')<\infty and I(π′′)≤I(π)+∫X∣S(x)−x∣2 μ(dx)\sqrt{I(\pi'')}\le\sqrt{I(\pi)}+\sqrt{\int_{X}|S(x)-x|^{2}\,\mu(dx)}.

6. (Quantisation) For every Borel T:X→XT:X\to X whose image T(X)T(X) is a finite set, T(X)T(X) is Borel and T#ν(X∖T(X))=0T_{\#}\nu(X\setminus T(X))=0. If ν∈P2(X)\nu\in\mathcal{P}_{2}(X) and ε∈R\varepsilon\in\mathbb{R} satisfies 0<ε0<\varepsilon, then there is a Borel map T:X→XT:X\to X whose image is a finite set, such that ∫X∣T(y)−y∣2 ν(dy)≤ε2\int_{X}|T(y)-y|^{2}\,\nu(dy)\le\varepsilon^{2}.

7. (Gluing over a finitely supported measure) Let λ,ρ∈P(X)\lambda,\rho\in\mathcal{P}(X) with ρ(X∖F)=0\rho(X\setminus F)=0 for some finite set F⊆XF\subseteq X, and let π12∈Π(μ,ρ)\pi_{12}\in\Pi(\mu,\rho) and π23∈Π(ρ,λ)\pi_{23}\in\Pi(\rho,\lambda) satisfy I(π12)<∞I(\pi_{12})<\infty and I(π23)<∞I(\pi_{23})<\infty. Then there is π13∈Π(μ,λ)\pi_{13}\in\Pi(\mu,\lambda) with I(π13)<∞I(\pi_{13})<\infty and

I(π13)≤I(π12)+I(π23).\sqrt{I(\pi_{13})}\le\sqrt{I(\pi_{12})}+\sqrt{I(\pi_{23})} .

8. (Lipschitz bound) Let π∈Π(μ,ν)\pi\in\Pi(\mu,\nu) satisfy I(π)<∞I(\pi)<\infty, and let f:X→Rf:X\to\mathbb{R} be bounded and Lipschitz with constant LL. Then ff is Borel, integrable with respect to μ\mu and to ν\nu, and

∣∫Xf dμ−∫Xf dν∣≤LI(π).\Bigl|\int_{X}f\,d\mu-\int_{X}f\,d\nu\Bigr|\le L\sqrt{I(\pi)} .

9. (Moment bound) If μ,ν∈P2(X)\mu,\nu\in\mathcal{P}_{2}(X) and π∈Π(μ,ν)\pi\in\Pi(\mu,\nu), then ∣M2(μ)−M2(ν)∣≤I(π)\bigl|\sqrt{M_{2}(\mu)}-\sqrt{M_{2}(\nu)}\bigr|\le\sqrt{I(\pi)}.
