Criteria for Invertibility of a Square Real Matrix

For a square real matrix A, the following are equivalent: Ax = 0 only for x = 0; x -> Ax is injective; x -> Ax is surjective; A has a right inverse; A has a left inverse; A is invertible.

Statement

In the setting of Metric Spaces: Balls, the Metric Topology, and the Real and Complex Numbers as Metric Spaces, let n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N} and let A∈Mn(R)A\in\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R}) be a square real matrix, with the matrix-vector product, the origin 00 of Rn\mathbb{R}^{n}, the matrix product and the identity matrix InI_{n}. The following conditions are equivalent.

(a) The only x∈Rnx\in\mathbb{R}^{n} with Ax=0Ax=0 is x=0x=0.

(b) For x,y∈Rnx,y\in\mathbb{R}^{n}, Ax=AyAx=Ay implies x=yx=y.

(c) For every b∈Rnb\in\mathbb{R}^{n} there is x∈Rnx\in\mathbb{R}^{n} with Ax=bAx=b.

(d) AB=InAB=I_{n} for some B∈Mn(R)B\in\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R}).

(e) CA=InCA=I_{n} for some C∈Mn(R)C\in\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R}).

(f) AA is invertible.
