Affine Change of Variables for Lebesgue Measure on the Real Line

Under the affine map x -> ax + b with a nonzero, preimages of Borel sets have Lebesgue measure |a|^{-1} times the original, and integrals of f(ax+b) are |a|^{-1} times the integral of f, for nonnegative and for integrable f.

Statement

In the setting of Measurable Functions and the Lebesgue Integral: Notation, let λ\lambda be Lebesgue measure on R\mathbb{R}, let a,b∈Ra,b\in\mathbb{R} with a≠0a\neq0, and let T:R→RT:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R} be the function

T(x)=ax+b.T(x)=ax+b .

Preimages of Borel sets. TT is B(R)/B(R)\mathcal{B}(\mathbb{R})/\mathcal{B}(\mathbb{R})-measurable, and

λ(T−1(B))=∣a∣−1 λ(B)(B∈B(R)).\lambda\bigl(T^{-1}(B)\bigr)=|a|^{-1}\,\lambda(B)\qquad(B\in\mathcal{B}(\mathbb{R})).

Nonnegative functions. For every f∈M+(R,B(R))f\in\mathcal{M}^{+}(\mathbb{R},\mathcal{B}(\mathbb{R})), f∘T∈M+(R,B(R))f\circ T\in\mathcal{M}^{+}(\mathbb{R},\mathcal{B}(\mathbb{R})) and

∫Rf(ax+b) dλ(x)=∣a∣−1∫Rf dλ.\int_{\mathbb{R}}f(ax+b)\,d\lambda(x)=|a|^{-1}\int_{\mathbb{R}}f\,d\lambda .

Integrable functions. Let f:R→Rf:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R} be measurable. Then f∘Tf\circ T is measurable, f∘T∈L1(λ)f\circ T\in\mathcal{L}^{1}(\lambda) if and only if f∈L1(λ)f\in\mathcal{L}^{1}(\lambda), and in that case

∫Rf(ax+b) dλ(x)=∣a∣−1∫Rf dλ.\int_{\mathbb{R}}f(ax+b)\,d\lambda(x)=|a|^{-1}\int_{\mathbb{R}}f\,d\lambda .
