One-Step Extension of a Dominated Linear Functional

A linear functional dominated by a sublinear functional on a linear subspace M extends to M + ℝx₀ for a point x₀ outside M, by assigning to x₀ the canonical value c given by a supremum; the extension is still dominated.

Statement

In the setting of Separable Real Normed Spaces and Hahn–Banach: Notation, let VV be a real vector space, let pp be a sublinear functional on VV, let MM be a linear subspace of VV, let x0∈V∖Mx_{0}\in V\setminus M, and let ff be a linear functional on MM with f(m)≤p(m)f(m)\le p(m) for every m∈Mm\in M. Let

M+Rx0={m+t x0:m∈M, t∈R}.M+\mathbb{R}x_{0}=\{m+t\,x_{0}:m\in M,\ t\in\mathbb{R}\}.

The enlarged subspace. M+Rx0M+\mathbb{R}x_{0} is a linear subspace of VV containing MM and x0x_{0}.

Unique representation. If m,m′∈Mm,m'\in M and t,t′∈Rt,t'\in\mathbb{R} satisfy m+t x0=m′+t′ x0m+t\,x_{0}=m'+t'\,x_{0}, then m=m′m=m' and t=t′t=t'.

The extension constant. The set {f(m)−p(m−x0):m∈M}\{f(m)-p(m-x_{0}):m\in M\} is nonempty and bounded above, and its supremum cc satisfies

f(m)−p(m−x0)≤c≤p(m+x0)−f(m)for every m∈M.f(m)-p(m-x_{0})\le c\le p(m+x_{0})-f(m)\qquad\text{for every }m\in M.

The extension. With cc as in (iii), the function g:M+Rx0→Rg:M+\mathbb{R}x_{0}\to\mathbb{R} given by

g(m+t x0)=f(m)+t c(m∈M, t∈R)g(m+t\,x_{0})=f(m)+t\,c\qquad(m\in M,\ t\in\mathbb{R})

is well defined by (ii), it is a linear functional on M+Rx0M+\mathbb{R}x_{0}, g(m)=f(m)g(m)=f(m) for every m∈Mm\in M, and g(y)≤p(y)g(y)\le p(y) for every y∈M+Rx0y\in M+\mathbb{R}x_{0}.
