Integrals over Subintervals of a Closed Interval: Notation

Notation for Lebesgue integrals of real- and vector-valued integrable functions over subintervals of a closed interval, used for ordinary differential equations with measurable time dependence.

Statement

Base. This setting extends Ordinary Differential Equations on a Compact Interval: Standing Notation and Measurable Functions and the Lebesgue Integral: Standing Notation: their conventions and notation are in force. Below, a,b∈Ra,b\in\mathbb{R} with a<ba<b, n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N}, and ([a,b],B[a,b],λ[a,b])([a,b],\mathcal{B}_{[a,b]},\lambda_{[a,b]}) is the restriction of Lebesgue measure to [a,b][a,b], as in Measurable Functions and the Lebesgue Integral: Standing Notation (vii).

Integrable functions on [a,b][a,b]. L1([a,b])\mathcal{L}^{1}([a,b]) and L1([a,b];Rn)\mathcal{L}^{1}([a,b];\mathbb{R}^{n}) denote L1(λ[a,b])\mathcal{L}^{1}(\lambda_{[a,b]}) and L1(λ[a,b];Rn)\mathcal{L}^{1}(\lambda_{[a,b]};\mathbb{R}^{n}).

Integrals over subintervals. Let a≤s≤t≤ba\le s\le t\le b, and let ([s,t],B[s,t],λ[s,t])([s,t],\mathcal{B}_{[s,t]},\lambda_{[s,t]}) be the restriction of ([a,b],B[a,b],λ[a,b])([a,b],\mathcal{B}_{[a,b]},\lambda_{[a,b]}) to [s,t][s,t] (here [s,t]∈B[a,b][s,t]\in\mathcal{B}_{[a,b]}, since [s,t]⊆[a,b][s,t]\subseteq[a,b] and intervals are Borel sets by Intervals Are Borel, and Rays, Half-Open Intervals and Rational Intervals Generate the Borel Sigma-Algebra of the Real Line (ii)). For a function f:[a,b]→Rf:[a,b]\to\mathbb{R} with f∣[s,t]∈L1(λ[s,t])f|_{[s,t]}\in\mathcal{L}^{1}(\lambda_{[s,t]}), and for a function g:[a,b]→Rng:[a,b]\to\mathbb{R}^{n} with g∣[s,t]∈L1(λ[s,t];Rn)g|_{[s,t]}\in\mathcal{L}^{1}(\lambda_{[s,t]};\mathbb{R}^{n}),

∫[s,t]f dλ=∫f∣[s,t] dλ[s,t]∈R,∫[s,t]g dλ=∫g∣[s,t] dλ[s,t]∈Rn.\int_{[s,t]}f\,d\lambda=\int f|_{[s,t]}\,d\lambda_{[s,t]}\in\mathbb{R},\qquad \int_{[s,t]}g\,d\lambda=\int g|_{[s,t]}\,d\lambda_{[s,t]}\in\mathbb{R}^{n}.

When the integrand is given by an expression h(r)h(r) in r∈[a,b]r\in[a,b], ∫[s,t]h(r) dr\int_{[s,t]}h(r)\,dr denotes ∫[s,t]h dλ\int_{[s,t]}h\,d\lambda for the function h:r↦h(r)h:r\mapsto h(r).
