Arithmetic and Order Rules in the Real Numbers, Stated for ℝ

For all real numbers x, y and z, the closure, commutative, associative, distributive, neutral, negative and zero-product laws, the four laws of the total order, and that |x| is a nonnegative real number.

Statement

This helper adopts the setting of The Real Numbers, with the Natural Numbers, Integers and Rationals Identified with Subsets of the Reals, and Completeness: R\mathbb{R}, its order ≤\le, its operations ++ and ⋅\cdot, and its elements 00 and 11 are as in The Real Numbers, with the Natural Numbers, Integers and Rationals Identified with Subsets of the Reals, and Completeness §reals; for x∈Rx\in\mathbb{R}, −x-x is the negative of xx and ∣x∣|x| its absolute value. Let xx, yy and zz be real numbers.

++ and ⋅\cdot are binary operations on R\mathbb{R}, and x+y∈Rx+y\in\mathbb{R}, x⋅y∈Rx\cdot y\in\mathbb{R}, −x∈R-x\in\mathbb{R}, 0∈R0\in\mathbb{R} and 1∈R1\in\mathbb{R}.

x+y=y+xx+y=y+x and x⋅y=y⋅xx\cdot y=y\cdot x.

(x+y)+z=x+(y+z)(x+y)+z=x+(y+z) and (x⋅y)⋅z=x⋅(y⋅z)(x\cdot y)\cdot z=x\cdot(y\cdot z).

x⋅(y+z)=x⋅y+x⋅zx\cdot(y+z)=x\cdot y+x\cdot z and (x+y)⋅z=x⋅z+y⋅z(x+y)\cdot z=x\cdot z+y\cdot z.

x+0=xx+0=x, 0+x=x0+x=x, x⋅1=xx\cdot1=x and 1⋅x=x1\cdot x=x.

x+(−x)=0x+(-x)=0 and (−x)+x=0(-x)+x=0.

0⋅x=00\cdot x=0 and x⋅0=0x\cdot0=0.

x≤xx\le x; if x≤yx\le y and y≤xy\le x, then x=yx=y; if x≤yx\le y and y≤zy\le z, then x≤zx\le z; and x≤yx\le y or y≤xy\le x.

∣x∣∈R|x|\in\mathbb{R} and 0≤∣x∣0\le|x|.
