Basic Properties of the State-Transition Matrix

The state-transition matrix Φ of a continuous A gives all solutions of x'=A(t)x through Φ(t,s)ξ, satisfies Φ(t,r)Φ(r,s)=Φ(t,s) and Φ(t,s)^{-1}=Φ(s,t), is jointly continuous, has s-derivative -Φ(t,s)A(s), is bounded by exp(K|t-s|), transposes to the transition matrix of -Aᵀ and restricts to subintervals.

Statement

In the settings of Single-Variable Calculus on an Interval and Euclidean Space and Real Matrices: Standing Notation, let a,b∈Ra,b\in\mathbb{R} with a<ba<b, let n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N}, let A:[a,b]→Mn(R)A:[a,b]\to\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R}) be continuous on [a,b][a,b], for dRd_{\mathbb{R}} on [a,b][a,b] and dnd_{n} on Mn(R)\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R}), and let Φ=ΦA\Phi=\Phi_{A} be the state-transition matrix of AA on [a,b][a,b]. Differentiability and derivatives of maps from [a,b][a,b] into Rn\mathbb{R}^{n} or into Mn×q(R)\mathcal{M}_{n\times q}(\mathbb{R}) (q∈Nq\in\mathbb{N}) are as in Derivative of a Vector-Valued or Matrix-Valued Map on an Interval (i), Derivative of a Vector-Valued or Matrix-Valued Map on an Interval (ii) and Derivative of a Vector-Valued or Matrix-Valued Map on an Interval (iii), taken relative to [a,b][a,b].

Let s∈[a,b]s\in[a,b] and ξ∈Rn\xi\in\mathbb{R}^{n}. The map [a,b]→Rn[a,b]\to\mathbb{R}^{n}, t↦Φ(t,s)ξt\mapsto\Phi(t,s)\xi, is differentiable, with derivative A(t)(Φ(t,s)ξ)A(t)\bigl(\Phi(t,s)\xi\bigr) at every t∈[a,b]t\in[a,b], and it is the only differentiable map x:[a,b]→Rnx:[a,b]\to\mathbb{R}^{n} with x′(t)=A(t)x(t)x'(t)=A(t)x(t) for every t∈[a,b]t\in[a,b] and x(s)=ξx(s)=\xi. Likewise, for q∈Nq\in\mathbb{N} and Ξ∈Mn×q(R)\Xi\in\mathcal{M}_{n\times q}(\mathbb{R}), the map t↦Φ(t,s)Ξt\mapsto\Phi(t,s)\Xi is differentiable, with derivative A(t)(Φ(t,s)Ξ)A(t)\bigl(\Phi(t,s)\Xi\bigr) at every t∈[a,b]t\in[a,b], and it is the only differentiable map X:[a,b]→Mn×q(R)X:[a,b]\to\mathcal{M}_{n\times q}(\mathbb{R}) with X′(t)=A(t)X(t)X'(t)=A(t)X(t) for every t∈[a,b]t\in[a,b] and X(s)=ΞX(s)=\Xi.

Φ(t,r)Φ(r,s)=Φ(t,s)\Phi(t,r)\Phi(r,s)=\Phi(t,s) for all r,s,t∈[a,b]r,s,t\in[a,b].

For all s,t∈[a,b]s,t\in[a,b], Φ(t,s)\Phi(t,s) is invertible, and Φ(t,s)−1=Φ(s,t)\Phi(t,s)^{-1}=\Phi(s,t).

Φ\Phi is continuous on [a,b]×[a,b][a,b]\times[a,b], for the product metric of dRd_{\mathbb{R}} and dRd_{\mathbb{R}} on R×R\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{R}, a metric by The Product Metric is a Metric (i), and for dnd_{n} on Mn(R)\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R}).

For every t∈[a,b]t\in[a,b], the map [a,b]→Mn(R)[a,b]\to\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R}), s↦Φ(t,s)s\mapsto\Phi(t,s), is differentiable, with derivative −(Φ(t,s)A(s))-\bigl(\Phi(t,s)A(s)\bigr) at every s∈[a,b]s\in[a,b].

Here ∥⋅∥\lVert\cdot\rVert is the operator norm, as in Euclidean Space and Real Matrices: Standing Notation (vi), and exp⁡\exp is the exponential function. Let K∈RK\in\mathbb{R} with K≥0K\ge0 and ∥A(r)∥≤K\lVert A(r)\rVert\le K for every r∈[a,b]r\in[a,b]. Then ∥Φ(t,s)∥≤exp⁡(K∣t−s∣)\lVert\Phi(t,s)\rVert\le\exp\bigl(K|t-s|\bigr) for all s,t∈[a,b]s,t\in[a,b].

The map −A⊤:[a,b]→Mn(R)-A^{\top}:[a,b]\to\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R}), t↦−A(t)⊤t\mapsto-A(t)^{\top}, is continuous on [a,b][a,b], and its state-transition matrix Φ−A⊤\Phi_{-A^{\top}} on [a,b][a,b] satisfies Φ−A⊤(t,s)=Φ(s,t)⊤\Phi_{-A^{\top}}(t,s)=\Phi(s,t)^{\top} for all s,t∈[a,b]s,t\in[a,b].

Let c,d∈[a,b]c,d\in[a,b] with c<dc<d. The restriction A∣[c,d]:[c,d]→Mn(R)A|_{[c,d]}:[c,d]\to\mathcal{M}_{n}(\mathbb{R}) is continuous on [c,d][c,d], and its state-transition matrix ΦA∣[c,d]\Phi_{A|_{[c,d]}} on [c,d][c,d] satisfies ΦA∣[c,d](t,s)=Φ(t,s)\Phi_{A|_{[c,d]}}(t,s)=\Phi(t,s) for all s,t∈[c,d]s,t\in[c,d].
