Finitely Supported Multi-Indices: Order, Factorial, Powers and Weighted Order

Defines multi-indices as finitely supported sequences of nonnegative integers, together with their order, factorial, powers sαs^\alpha of a real sequence, weighted order s⋅αs\cdot\alpha, the sets of multi-indices of a given order, and the unit multi-indices εk\varepsilon_k with the decrement α−εk\alpha-\varepsilon_k.

Statement

In the setting of The Real Numbers: Standing Notation and Background, each natural number being identified with its image in R\mathbb{R} under the canonical map, and N0=N∪{0}⊆R\mathbb{N}_{0}=\mathbb{N}\cup\{0\}\subseteq\mathbb{R}. For n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N}, n!n! is the factorial of nn, and 0!=10!=1; for real yy and j∈Nj\in\mathbb{N}, yjy^{j} is the jjth power of yy, and y0=1y^{0}=1; finite products are those of Finite Product Notation.

1. (Multi-indices) A multi-index is a sequence α=(αk)k∈N\alpha=(\alpha_{k})_{k\in\mathbb{N}} in N0\mathbb{N}_{0} for which there is n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N} with αk=0\alpha_{k}=0 for every k>nk>n; such an nn is a length bound for α\alpha. A\mathcal{A} is the set of multi-indices.

2. (Order, factorial, powers and weighted order) For α∈A\alpha\in\mathcal{A} with length bound nn and a real sequence s=(sk)k∈Ns=(s_{k})_{k\in\mathbb{N}}, the order of α\alpha, its factorial, the power sαs^{\alpha} and the weighted order s⋅αs\cdot\alpha are

∣α∣=∑k=1nαk∈N0,α!=∏k=1nαk!,sα=∏k=1nskαk,s⋅α=∑k=1nαksk;|\alpha|=\sum_{k=1}^{n}\alpha_{k}\in\mathbb{N}_{0},\qquad\alpha!=\prod_{k=1}^{n}\alpha_{k}!,\qquad s^{\alpha}=\prod_{k=1}^{n}s_{k}^{\alpha_{k}},\qquad s\cdot\alpha=\sum_{k=1}^{n}\alpha_{k}s_{k};

they do not depend on the length bound, since passing to a larger length bound adds only terms αk=0\alpha_{k}=0 and αksk=0\alpha_{k}s_{k}=0 and factors 0!=10!=1 and sk0=1s_{k}^{0}=1. For m∈N0m\in\mathbb{N}_{0}, Am={α∈A:∣α∣=m}\mathcal{A}_{m}=\{\alpha\in\mathcal{A}:|\alpha|=m\}.

3. (Unit multi-indices) For k∈Nk\in\mathbb{N}, εk∈A\varepsilon_{k}\in\mathcal{A} is the multi-index with kk-th term 11 and all other terms 00 (a length bound is kk). For α∈A\alpha\in\mathcal{A} and k∈Nk\in\mathbb{N} with αk≥1\alpha_{k}\ge1, α−εk\alpha-\varepsilon_{k} is the sequence with kk-th term αk−1\alpha_{k}-1 and all other terms those of α\alpha; it is a multi-index, with every length bound of α\alpha as a length bound, since αk−1∈N0\alpha_{k}-1\in\mathbb{N}_{0} for αk∈N\alpha_{k}\in\mathbb{N}.
