Integrals of Functions over a Measurable Subset

Restricts a measure space to a measurable subset A and defines the integral over A of a nonnegative measurable function, and of a real-valued function integrable on A, as the integral of its restriction to A.

Statement

In the setting of Measure Spaces, Borel Sets and Lebesgue Measure on the Real Line: Standing Notation, let (X,F,μ)(X,\mathcal{F},\mu) be a measure space and let A∈FA\in\mathcal{F}. Let

FA={B∈F:B⊆A},μA=μ∣FA,\mathcal{F}_{A}=\{B\in\mathcal{F}:B\subseteq A\},\qquad \mu_{A}=\mu|_{\mathcal{F}_{A}},

so that FA\mathcal{F}_{A} is a σ\sigma-algebra on AA (Closure Properties of σ-Algebras, Intersections and Traces of σ-Algebras, and the Generated σ-Algebra (xi)) and μA\mu_{A}, the restriction of μ\mu to FA\mathcal{F}_{A}, is a function FA→[0,∞]\mathcal{F}_{A}\to[0,\infty] with μA(B)=μ(B)\mu_{A}(B)=\mu(B) for B∈FAB\in\mathcal{F}_{A} (Restricting a Measure to a Measurable Set). For a function ff on XX, f∣Af|_{A} is its restriction to AA, the function on AA with f∣A(x)=f(x)f|_{A}(x)=f(x).

The restricted measure space. The restriction of (X,F,μ)(X,\mathcal{F},\mu) to AA is the measure space (A,FA,μA)(A,\mathcal{F}_{A},\mu_{A}) (μA\mu_{A} is a measure by Restricting a Measure to a Measurable Set (i)).

Nonnegative functions. For f∈M+(X,F)f\in\mathcal{M}^{+}(X,\mathcal{F}), the set of measurable functions into [0,∞][0,\infty], the integral of ff over AA with respect to μ\mu is the integral

∫Af dμ=∫f∣A dμA∈[0,∞]\int_{A}f\,d\mu=\int f|_{A}\,d\mu_{A}\in[0,\infty]

(here f∣A∈M+(A,FA)f|_{A}\in\mathcal{M}^{+}(A,\mathcal{F}_{A}) by Measurable Maps: Generators, Composition, Continuous Maps, Restrictions, and Criteria for Real- and [0,∞]-Valued Maps (viii)).

Integrability on AA. A function f∈Meas(X,F;R,B(R))f\in\mathrm{Meas}(X,\mathcal{F};\mathbb{R},\mathcal{B}(\mathbb{R})), the set of measurable functions X→RX\to\mathbb{R} of Measurable Map, and the Set of Measurable Maps (ii), is integrable on AA with respect to μ\mu if

f∣A∈L1(A,FA,μA),f|_{A}\in\mathcal{L}^{1}(A,\mathcal{F}_{A},\mu_{A}),

the set of integrable functions for (A,FA,μA)(A,\mathcal{F}_{A},\mu_{A}) (here f∣Af|_{A} is measurable by Measurable Maps: Generators, Composition, Continuous Maps, Restrictions, and Criteria for Real- and [0,∞]-Valued Maps (viii)).

Integrals of integrable functions. If f∈Meas(X,F;R,B(R))f\in\mathrm{Meas}(X,\mathcal{F};\mathbb{R},\mathcal{B}(\mathbb{R})) is integrable on AA, the integral of ff over AA with respect to μ\mu is the real number

∫Af dμ=∫f∣A dμA,\int_{A}f\,d\mu=\int f|_{A}\,d\mu_{A},

the integral of f∣A∈L1(A,FA,μA)f|_{A}\in\mathcal{L}^{1}(A,\mathcal{F}_{A},\mu_{A}).
