Properties of Simple Functions and of the Simple Integral

Indicators of measurable sets are simple with simple integral the measure of the set; simple functions are closed under sums, products, multiples, maxima and minima; and the simple integral is computed by any disjoint representation, is additive, positively homogeneous and monotone, and defines a measure A ↦ I(s 1_A).

Statement

In the setting of Measure Spaces, Borel Sets and Lebesgue Measure on the Real Line: Standing Notation, let (X,F,μ)(X,\mathcal{F},\mu) be a measure space. Let S=S(X,F)\mathcal{S}=\mathcal{S}(X,\mathcal{F}) and S+=S+(X,F)\mathcal{S}^{+}=\mathcal{S}^{+}(X,\mathcal{F}) be the sets of simple functions and of nonnegative simple functions of Simple Functions, Nonnegative Simple Functions, and the Simple Integral (ii) and Simple Functions, Nonnegative Simple Functions, and the Simple Integral (iii), and Iμ:S+→[0,∞]I_{\mu}:\mathcal{S}^{+}\to[0,\infty] the simple integral with respect to μ\mu of Simple Functions, Nonnegative Simple Functions, and the Simple Integral (iv). For A⊆XA\subseteq X, 1A\mathbf{1}_{A} is the indicator function of AA. For s,t∈Ss,t\in\mathcal{S}, the maps s+ts+t, stst and cscs, for c∈Rc\in\mathbb{R}, are the pointwise sum, product and scalar multiple, and max⁡(s,t)\max(s,t) and min⁡(s,t)\min(s,t) are the maps X→RX\to\mathbb{R} with values max⁡{s(x),t(x)}\max\{s(x),t(x)\} and min⁡{s(x),t(x)}\min\{s(x),t(x)\} at x∈Xx\in X, formed in R\mathbb{R} as in The Maximum and Minimum of Two Elements of a Total Order (i); s≤ts\le t means s(x)≤t(x)s(x)\le t(x) for every x∈Xx\in X.

For every A∈FA\in\mathcal{F}, 1A∈S+\mathbf{1}_{A}\in\mathcal{S}^{+} and Iμ(1A)=μ(A)I_{\mu}(\mathbf{1}_{A})=\mu(A).

Let s,t∈Ss,t\in\mathcal{S} and c∈Rc\in\mathbb{R}. Then s+ts+t, stst, cscs, max⁡(s,t)\max(s,t) and min⁡(s,t)\min(s,t) belong to S\mathcal{S}; if moreover s,t∈S+s,t\in\mathcal{S}^{+} and c≥0c\ge0, they belong to S+\mathcal{S}^{+}.

Let II be a finite set, let i↦cii\mapsto c_{i} be a map from II to R\mathbb{R} with ci≥0c_{i}\ge0 for every i∈Ii\in I, and let i↦Aii\mapsto A_{i} be a map from II to F\mathcal{F} with Ai∩Aj=∅A_{i}\cap A_{j}=\emptyset for all i,j∈Ii,j\in I with i≠ji\neq j. Let s:X→Rs:X\to\mathbb{R} satisfy s(x)=∑i∈Ici1Ai(x)s(x)=\sum_{i\in I}c_{i}\mathbf{1}_{A_{i}}(x) for every x∈Xx\in X, the sum over II, formed in R\mathbb{R}, of the map i↦ci1Ai(x)i\mapsto c_{i}\mathbf{1}_{A_{i}}(x) (which exists, by Maps Used to Build the Integral: Fibres of a Map, Pointwise Combinations with Finite Image, Tail Extrema of a Sequence of Maps, the Integer Part, and Indicators (v)). Then s∈S+s\in\mathcal{S}^{+} and Iμ(s)=∑i∈Ici⋅μ(Ai)I_{\mu}(s)=\sum_{i\in I}c_{i}\cdot\mu(A_{i}), the sum and the products in [0,∞][0,\infty].

For all s,t∈S+s,t\in\mathcal{S}^{+}, Iμ(s+t)=Iμ(s)+Iμ(t)I_{\mu}(s+t)=I_{\mu}(s)+I_{\mu}(t).

For every s∈S+s\in\mathcal{S}^{+} and every c∈Rc\in\mathbb{R} with c≥0c\ge0, Iμ(cs)=c⋅Iμ(s)I_{\mu}(cs)=c\cdot I_{\mu}(s).

For all s,t∈S+s,t\in\mathcal{S}^{+} with s≤ts\le t, Iμ(s)≤Iμ(t)I_{\mu}(s)\le I_{\mu}(t).

Let s∈S+s\in\mathcal{S}^{+}; for A∈FA\in\mathcal{F}, s1A∈S+s\mathbf{1}_{A}\in\mathcal{S}^{+} by (i) and (ii). The map ν:F→[0,∞]\nu:\mathcal{F}\to[0,\infty], A↦Iμ(s1A)A\mapsto I_{\mu}(s\mathbf{1}_{A}), is a measure on (X,F)(X,\mathcal{F}).
