The Dual of a Real Normed Space Is a Real Banach Space; Weak-Star Limits

The bounded linear functionals on a real normed space form a real vector space under pointwise operations, the dual norm is a norm on it, and the resulting normed space is complete. Weak-star limits are unique, and convergence in the dual norm implies weak-star convergence.

Statement

In the setting of Locally Compact Metric Spaces and Compactly Supported Functions: Standing Notation, let XX be a real normed space with dual space X∗X^{*}, and for F∈X∗F\in X^{*} let ∥F∥∗\lVert F\rVert_{*} be its dual norm. For F,G∈X∗F,G\in X^{*} and λ∈R\lambda\in\mathbb{R}, F+GF+G and λF\lambda F are the pointwise sum and scalar multiple, and 00 is the constant zero function on XX.

Vector space. F+G∈X∗F+G\in X^{*} and λF∈X∗\lambda F\in X^{*} for all F,G∈X∗F,G\in X^{*} and λ∈R\lambda\in\mathbb{R}, and X∗X^{*} with these operations is a real vector space. Its zero vector is 00, the negative of FF is the function x↦−F(x)x\mapsto-F(x), and

(F−G)(x)=F(x)−G(x)(F,G∈X∗, x∈X).(F-G)(x)=F(x)-G(x)\qquad(F,G\in X^{*},\ x\in X).

Normed space. ∥⋅∥∗\lVert\cdot\rVert_{*} is a norm on X∗X^{*}.

Completeness. (X∗,∥⋅∥∗)(X^{*},\lVert\cdot\rVert_{*}) is a real Banach space.

Let (Fm)m∈N(F_{m})_{m\in\mathbb{N}} be a sequence in X∗X^{*}, and let F,G∈X∗F,G\in X^{*}.

Uniqueness of weak-star limits. If (Fm)(F_{m}) converges weak-star to FF and to GG, then F=GF=G.

Norm convergence implies weak-star convergence. If the real sequence (∥Fm−F∥∗)m∈N(\lVert F_{m}-F\rVert_{*})_{m\in\mathbb{N}} is a null sequence, that is

∥Fm−F∥∗→0,\lVert F_{m}-F\rVert_{*}\to0,

then (Fm)(F_{m}) converges weak-star to FF.
