Separating a Point from an Open Convex Set in a Separable Real Normed Space

In a separable real normed space, a point outside a nonempty open convex set is strictly separated from it by a bounded linear functional.

Statement

In the setting of Separable Real Normed Spaces and Hahn–Banach: Notation, let XX be a separable real normed space, let C⊆XC\subseteq X be nonempty, open and convex, and let x0∈X∖Cx_{0}\in X\setminus C.

Separation. There is an element FF of the dual space X∗X^{*} with

F(x)<F(x0)for every x∈C.F(x)<F(x_{0})\qquad\text{for every }x\in C.
