Groups: Standing Notation

Standing notation for groups and monoids: products, identities, inverses and powers, additive notation for abelian groups, subgroups, cosets, order and index, kernels and images, normal subgroups and quotients, cyclic subgroups and element orders, and group actions.

Statement

Base. This setting extends Routine Facts, Continued: Typed Arithmetic, Maps and Predicativity: its conventions and notation are in force.

Groups and monoids. For a group (G,⋅)(G,\cdot), the product of g,h∈Gg,h\in G is written ghgh, the identity element is ee (or eGe_{G}), the inverse of gg is g−1g^{-1}, and for n∈Zn\in\mathbb{Z} the power of gg is gng^{n}. A group is named by its underlying set when the operation is clear. A monoid (M,⋅)(M,\cdot) is written the same way, with identity ee, and the inverse of a unit uu of MM, unique by Units of a Monoid: Unique Inverses, Products, and the Group of Units (i), is u−1u^{-1}.

Additive notation. For an abelian group one may write instead g+hg+h for the product of gg and hh, 00 for the identity, −g-g for the inverse of gg, and ngng for the power gng^{n} (n∈Zn\in\mathbb{Z}).

Subgroups and cosets. H≤GH\le G means that HH is a subgroup of GG. For H≤GH\le G and g∈Gg\in G, gHgH is the left coset and HgHg the right coset of HH by gg, G/HG/H is the set of left cosets of HH, ∣G∣|G| is the order of GG when GG is finite, and [G:H][G:H] is the index of HH in GG.

Homomorphisms. For a group homomorphism f:G→Hf:G\to H, ker⁡f\ker f is its kernel and f(G)f(G) its image. G≅HG\cong H means that there is an isomorphism from GG to HH.

Generated sets and orders of elements. For g∈Gg\in G, ⟨g⟩\langle g\rangle is the set generated by gg and, when gg has finite order, ord⁡(g)\operatorname{ord}(g) is the order of gg.

Actions. For an action of GG on a set XX, g⋅xg\cdot x is the image of x∈Xx\in X under g∈Gg\in G, GxGx is the orbit of xx, and GxG_{x} is its stabilizer.
