Additive and Multiplicative Inverses Are Unique

In a commutative ring every element has exactly one additive inverse, and in a field every nonzero element has exactly one multiplicative inverse.

Statement

In the setting of Class Theory NBG: the Axioms, Standing Conventions and Basic Notation, let rr, with ++, ⋅\cdot, 00 and 11, be a commutative ring.

For every x∈rx\in r there is exactly one w∈rw\in r with x+w=0x+w=0.

If rr, with ++, ⋅\cdot, 00 and 11, is a field, then for every x∈rx\in r with x≠0x\neq0 there is exactly one y∈ry\in r with x⋅y=1x\cdot y=1.
