Basic Properties of the Integral of Nonnegative Measurable Maps

The integral of a nonnegative measurable map agrees with the simple integral on nonnegative simple functions, gives the measure on indicators, is monotone and positively homogeneous, and vanishes on the zero map.

Statement

In the setting of Measure Spaces, Borel Sets and Lebesgue Measure on the Real Line: Standing Notation, let (X,F,μ)(X,\mathcal{F},\mu) be a measure space. Let M+=M+(X,F)\mathcal{M}^{+}=\mathcal{M}^{+}(X,\mathcal{F}) be the set of measurable maps into [0,∞][0,\infty] of Nonnegative Measurable Maps and Their Lebesgue Integral (i), and ∫Xf dμ\int_{X}f\,d\mu, for f∈M+f\in\mathcal{M}^{+}, the integral of Nonnegative Measurable Maps and Their Lebesgue Integral (ii). Let S+=S+(X,F)\mathcal{S}^{+}=\mathcal{S}^{+}(X,\mathcal{F}) be the set of nonnegative simple functions of Simple Functions, Nonnegative Simple Functions, and the Simple Integral (iii), and IμI_{\mu} the simple integral of Simple Functions, Nonnegative Simple Functions, and the Simple Integral (iv); an element of S+\mathcal{S}^{+} has values in [0,∞][0,\infty] by The Extended Real Line, Its Order, and [0,∞] (ii), so it is also a map X→[0,∞]X\to[0,\infty]. For A⊆XA\subseteq X, 1A\mathbf{1}_{A} is the indicator function of AA.

S+⊆M+\mathcal{S}^{+}\subseteq\mathcal{M}^{+}, and ∫Xs dμ=Iμ(s)\int_{X}s\,d\mu=I_{\mu}(s) for every s∈S+s\in\mathcal{S}^{+}.

For every A∈FA\in\mathcal{F}, 1A∈M+\mathbf{1}_{A}\in\mathcal{M}^{+} and ∫X1A dμ=μ(A)\int_{X}\mathbf{1}_{A}\,d\mu=\mu(A).

For all f,g∈M+f,g\in\mathcal{M}^{+} with f(x)≤g(x)f(x)\le g(x) for every x∈Xx\in X, ∫Xf dμ≤∫Xg dμ\int_{X}f\,d\mu\le\int_{X}g\,d\mu.

Let c∈Rc\in\mathbb{R} with c≥0c\ge0, so that c∈[0,∞]c\in[0,\infty] by The Extended Real Line, Its Order, and [0,∞] (ii), and let f∈M+f\in\mathcal{M}^{+}. Every map h:X→[0,∞]h:X\to[0,\infty] with h(x)=c⋅f(x)h(x)=c\cdot f(x) for every x∈Xx\in X, the product of Addition and Multiplication on [0,∞] (ii), belongs to M+\mathcal{M}^{+} and satisfies ∫Xh dμ=c⋅∫Xf dμ\int_{X}h\,d\mu=c\cdot\int_{X}f\,d\mu.

Every map z:X→[0,∞]z:X\to[0,\infty] with z(x)=0z(x)=0 for every x∈Xx\in X belongs to M+\mathcal{M}^{+} and satisfies ∫Xz dμ=0\int_{X}z\,d\mu=0.
