The Multinomial Coefficient

The multinomial coefficient of a tuple of natural numbers with zero is the unique natural number that, multiplied by the product of the factorials of the entries, gives the factorial of their sum.

Statement

In the setting of Routine Facts Used Without Citation: Arithmetic, Maps, Predicativity and Indices, let m∈Nm\in\mathbb{N} and (k1,…,km)∈N0m(k_{1},\dots,k_{m})\in\mathbb{N}_{0}^{m}, and write k1+⋯+km=∑i=1mkik_{1}+\dots+k_{m}=\sum_{i=1}^{m}k_{i}.

The multinomial coefficient. The multinomial coefficient

(k1+⋯+kmk1,…,km)\binom{k_{1}+\dots+k_{m}}{k_{1},\dots,k_{m}}

is the unique M∈N0M\in\mathbb{N}_{0} with M∏i=1mki!=(∑i=1mki)!M\prod_{i=1}^{m}k_{i}!=\bigl(\sum_{i=1}^{m}k_{i}\bigr)!, given by Existence and Uniqueness of the Multinomial Coefficients (i).
