Arithmetic in [0,∞]: Monoid Laws, Distributivity, Monotonicity and Cancellation

The sum and the product on [0,∞] are commutative monoids linked by distributivity; both are monotone, a sum dominates each summand, and real summands cancel.

Statement

In the setting of Routine Facts Used Without Citation: Arithmetic, Maps, Predicativity and Indices, let [0,∞][0,\infty], ∞\infty and the order ≤\le be as in The Extended Real Line, Its Order, and [0,∞] (ii) and The Extended Real Line, Its Order, and [0,∞] (iii), and the sum ++ and the product ⋅\cdot on [0,∞][0,\infty] as in Addition and Multiplication on [0,∞] (i) and Addition and Multiplication on [0,∞] (ii). Let a,b,c∈[0,∞]a,b,c\in[0,\infty].

The sum ++ on [0,∞][0,\infty] is associative and commutative, and 00 is a neutral element of it.

The product ⋅\cdot on [0,∞][0,\infty] is associative and commutative, and 11 is a neutral element of it.

a(b+c)=ab+aca(b+c)=ab+ac.

If a≤ba\le b, then a+c≤b+ca+c\le b+c and ac≤bcac\le bc.

a≤a+ca\le a+c.

If c∈Rc\in\mathbb{R} and a+c≤b+ca+c\le b+c, then a≤ba\le b.
