Derivatives of a Function on the Sobolev Space of Order -1 along the Fourier Modes

A function on the state space is twice differentiable along the modes when each of its restrictions to a line in the direction of a unit family is differentiable everywhere with a derivative differentiable at the base point; the first and second mode derivatives are these derivatives at the base point.

Statement

In the setting of The Wick-Square Problem on the Torus: Standing Notation, let φ:H−1→R\varphi:H^{-1}\to\mathbb{R}. For x∈H−1x\in H^{-1} and a mode k∈Znk\in\mathbb{Z}^{n}, the section of φ\varphi at xx along kk is the function σx,k:R→R\sigma_{x,k}:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}, σx,k(t)=φ(x+tek)\sigma_{x,k}(t)=\varphi(x+te_{k}), which is defined because x+tek∈H−1x+te_{k}\in H^{-1} by The Wick-Square Problem on the Torus: Standing Notation §units. Differentiability of a real function on R\mathbb{R} at a point is that of Single-Variable Calculus on an Interval §derivative, with the interval I=RI=\mathbb{R}, every point of which is an interior point of it.

1. (Twice differentiable along the modes) φ\varphi is twice differentiable along the modes if for every x∈H−1x\in H^{-1} and every k∈Znk\in\mathbb{Z}^{n} the section σx,k\sigma_{x,k} is differentiable at every point of R\mathbb{R} and its derivative σx,k′:R→R\sigma_{x,k}':\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R} is differentiable at 00.

2. (Mode derivatives) For such φ\varphi, x∈H−1x\in H^{-1} and k∈Znk\in\mathbb{Z}^{n}, the first and second derivatives of φ\varphi along the mode kk at xx are the real numbers

∂kφ(x)=σx,k′(0),∂k2φ(x)=(σx,k′)′(0).\partial_{k}\varphi(x)=\sigma_{x,k}'(0),\qquad\partial_{k}^{2}\varphi(x)=(\sigma_{x,k}')'(0).
