Relations, Domain, Range, Inverse and Composition

Defines a relation as a class of ordered pairs, and the domain, range, inverse and composition of classes regarded as relations, together with relations on a class.

Statement

In the setting of Class Theory NBG: the Axioms, Standing Conventions and Basic Notation, let RR, SS and AA be classes. The classes below are formed by class abstraction from formulas that quantify over set variables only, with the ordered pair (u,v)(u,v) used as a defined set symbol; these formulas are therefore predicative, as Class Theory NBG: the Axioms, Standing Conventions and Basic Notation §comprehension requires.

RR is a relation if every element of RR is an ordered pair, that is, for every p∈Rp\in R there are sets uu and vv with p=(u,v)p=(u,v). For sets uu and vv, uRvu\mathrel{R}v means (u,v)∈R(u,v)\in R.

The domain of RR is the class

dom⁡R={u:∃v ((u,v)∈R)}.\operatorname{dom}R=\{u:\exists v\,((u,v)\in R)\}.

The range of RR is the class

ran⁡R={v:∃u ((u,v)∈R)}.\operatorname{ran}R=\{v:\exists u\,((u,v)\in R)\}.

The inverse of RR is the class

R−1={p:∃u ∃v ((u,v)∈R∧p=(v,u))}.R^{-1}=\{p:\exists u\,\exists v\,((u,v)\in R\wedge p=(v,u))\}.

The composition of RR followed by SS is the class

S∘R={p:∃u ∃v ∃w ((u,v)∈R∧(v,w)∈S∧p=(u,w))}.S\circ R=\{p:\exists u\,\exists v\,\exists w\,((u,v)\in R\wedge(v,w)\in S\wedge p=(u,w))\}.

A relation on AA is a relation RR with R⊆A×AR\subseteq A\times A, where ⊆\subseteq is the subclass relation and A×AA\times A is the Cartesian product.
