A Homogeneous Linear System with More Unknowns than Equations Has a Nonzero Solution

If an m x n real matrix has fewer rows than columns, then Ax = 0 has a solution x different from 0.

Statement

In the setting of Metric Spaces: Balls, the Metric Topology, and the Real and Complex Numbers as Metric Spaces, let m,n∈Nm,n\in\mathbb{N} with m<nm<n, and let A∈Mm×n(R)A\in\mathcal{M}_{m\times n}(\mathbb{R}) be a real matrix, with the matrix-vector product and the origins 00 of Rn\mathbb{R}^{n} and Rm\mathbb{R}^{m}.

There is x∈Rnx\in\mathbb{R}^{n} with x≠0x\neq0 and Ax=0Ax=0.
