Changing the Variances of a Diagonal Gaussian Reference Measure: Equal Domains, the Shift of the Relative Entropy and the Shift of the Relative Score

Two diagonal Gaussian reference measures give the same measures of finite relative entropy and of finite relative Fisher information; the relative entropies differ by half the integral of the difference of the weighted squares plus a constant, and the relative scores differ by the difference of the scaling maps.

Statement

In the settings of The Real Numbers: Standing Notation and Background and The Intrinsic Calculus on the Wasserstein Space: Standing Notation, let cc and c′c' be variance vectors, with scaling maps ScS_{c} and Sc′S_{c'}, weighted squares ∣x∣c2|x|_{c}^{2} and ∣x∣c′2|x|_{c'}^{2} (x∈Rdx\in\mathbb{R}^{d}) and normalizing constants ZcZ_{c} and Zc′Z_{c'}, and let γc\gamma_{c} and γc′\gamma_{c'} be the diagonal Gaussian measures with variances cc and c′c'. Finite relative entropy and H(⋅ ∣ ⋅)H(\cdot\,|\,\cdot) are those of that definition on (Rd,B(Rd))(\mathbb{R}^{d},\mathcal{B}(\mathbb{R}^{d})); finite Fisher information relative to a diagonal Gaussian measure and the relative scores ζμc,ζμc′∈Tμ\zeta^{c}_{\mu},\zeta^{c'}_{\mu}\in T_{\mu} are those of that definition, and for μ∈P2(Rd)\mu\in\mathcal{P}_{2}(\mathbb{R}^{d}) the classes Sc,Sc′∈L2(μ;Rd)S_{c},S_{c'}\in L^{2}(\mu;\mathbb{R}^{d}) are as there; integrable is as in Probability Measures on Euclidean Space and Random Vectors: Standing Notation §measures. Let μ∈P2(Rd)\mu\in\mathcal{P}_{2}(\mathbb{R}^{d}).

1. (Equal domains) μ\mu has finite relative entropy with respect to γc\gamma_{c} if and only if it has finite relative entropy with respect to γc′\gamma_{c'}, and μ\mu has finite Fisher information relative to γc\gamma_{c} if and only if it has finite Fisher information relative to γc′\gamma_{c'}.

2. (The shift of the relative entropy) The function x↦∣x∣c′2−∣x∣c2x\mapsto|x|_{c'}^{2}-|x|_{c}^{2} is integrable with respect to μ\mu, and if μ\mu has finite relative entropy with respect to γc\gamma_{c}, then

H(μ ∣ γc′)=H(μ ∣ γc)+12∫Rd(∣x∣c′2−∣x∣c2) μ(dx)+Zc′−Zc.H(\mu\,|\,\gamma_{c'})=H(\mu\,|\,\gamma_{c})+\tfrac12\int_{\mathbb{R}^{d}}\bigl(|x|_{c'}^{2}-|x|_{c}^{2}\bigr)\,\mu(dx)+Z_{c'}-Z_{c}.

3. (The shift of the relative score) If μ\mu has finite Fisher information relative to γc\gamma_{c}, so that ζμc′\zeta^{c'}_{\mu} is defined by clause 1, then ζμc′=ζμc+Sc′−Sc\zeta^{c'}_{\mu}=\zeta^{c}_{\mu}+S_{c'}-S_{c} in L2(μ;Rd)L^{2}(\mu;\mathbb{R}^{d}).
