Norming Functionals in a Separable Real Normed Space, and the Dual Separates Points

In a separable real normed space every point x has a bounded linear functional F of dual norm at most 1 with F(x) = ‖x‖, of dual norm exactly 1 when the space is not {0}; hence bounded linear functionals separate points.

Statement

In the setting of Separable Real Normed Spaces and Hahn–Banach: Notation, let XX be a separable real normed space with zero vector 0X0_{X}, dual space X∗X^{*} and dual norm ∥⋅∥∗\lVert\cdot\rVert_{*}.

Norming functional. For every x∈Xx\in X there is F∈X∗F\in X^{*} with

∥F∥∗≤1andF(x)=∥x∥.\lVert F\rVert_{*}\le1\qquad\text{and}\qquad F(x)=\lVert x\rVert .

Unit norm. If X≠{0X}X\neq\{0_{X}\}, then for every x∈Xx\in X there is F∈X∗F\in X^{*} with ∥F∥∗=1\lVert F\rVert_{*}=1 and F(x)=∥x∥F(x)=\lVert x\rVert.

Separation of points. For all x,y∈Xx,y\in X with x≠yx\neq y there is F∈X∗F\in X^{*} with F(x)≠F(y)F(x)\neq F(y).
