The Mean Value Theorem and Inequality on Convex Open Sets

On a convex open subset of RnR^n, a differentiable real-valued function satisfies the mean value theorem along segments, a differentiable function whose derivative matrices are bounded in operator norm by M is M-Lipschitz, and a function with vanishing derivative is constant.

Statement

In the setting of Multivariable Calculus: Notation, let nn, mm and UU be as in Multivariable Calculus: Notation (ii), suppose that UU is convex, and let x,y∈Ux,y\in U. (The Jacobian matrix Df(z)Df(z) and the gradient ∇f(z)\nabla f(z) are the derivative matrix and the derivative vector of ff at zz, by The Derivative Is the Jacobian Matrix, and Is Unique (ii) and The Derivative Is the Jacobian Matrix, and Is Unique (i).)

Mean value theorem. Let f:U→Rf:U\to\mathbb{R} be differentiable on UU. Then there is t∈(0,1)t\in(0,1) such that the point z=(1−t)x+tyz=(1-t)x+ty of UU satisfies

f(y)−f(x)=∇f(z)⋅(y−x).f(y)-f(x)=\nabla f(z)\cdot(y-x).

Mean value inequality. Let f:U→Rmf:U\to\mathbb{R}^{m} be differentiable on UU, and let M∈RM\in\mathbb{R} satisfy ∥Df(z)∥≤M\lVert Df(z)\rVert\le M for every z∈Uz\in U. Then

∥f(y)−f(x)∥≤M ∥y−x∥.\lVert f(y)-f(x)\rVert\le M\,\lVert y-x\rVert.

Mean value inequality, real-valued. Let f:U→Rf:U\to\mathbb{R} be differentiable on UU, and let M∈RM\in\mathbb{R} satisfy ∥∇f(z)∥≤M\lVert\nabla f(z)\rVert\le M for every z∈Uz\in U. Then

∣f(y)−f(x)∣≤M ∥y−x∥.|f(y)-f(x)|\le M\,\lVert y-x\rVert.

Vanishing derivative. If f:U→Rmf:U\to\mathbb{R}^{m} is differentiable on UU with Df(z)=0m×nDf(z)=0_{m\times n} for every z∈Uz\in U, then f(x)=f(y)f(x)=f(y).

Vanishing gradient. If f:U→Rf:U\to\mathbb{R} is differentiable on UU with ∇f(z)=0\nabla f(z)=0 for every z∈Uz\in U, then f(x)=f(y)f(x)=f(y).
