Jordan Decomposition of a Bounded Linear Functional on the Continuous Functions with Compact Support

Every bounded linear functional on the space of continuous functions with compact support on a metric space is the difference of two bounded positive linear functionals whose dual norms are at most its own; the positive part is the supremum of the functional over the nonnegative functions below a given nonnegative function.

Statement

In the setting of The Dual of C_c(X): Standing Notation, let (X,d)(X,d) be a metric space and let Λ∈Cc(X)∗\Lambda\in C_{c}(X)^{*}.

Jordan decomposition. There are positive linear functionals Λ+,Λ−∈Cc(X)∗\Lambda^{+},\Lambda^{-}\in C_{c}(X)^{*} with

Λf=Λ+f−Λ−f(f∈Cc(X)),∥Λ+∥∗≤∥Λ∥∗,∥Λ−∥∗≤∥Λ∥∗,\Lambda f=\Lambda^{+}f-\Lambda^{-}f\qquad(f\in C_{c}(X)),\qquad\|\Lambda^{+}\|_{*}\le\|\Lambda\|_{*},\qquad\|\Lambda^{-}\|_{*}\le\|\Lambda\|_{*},

and with

Λ+f=sup⁡{Λg:g∈Cc(X), 0≤g≤f}(f∈Cc(X), f≥0).\Lambda^{+}f=\sup\{\Lambda g:g\in C_{c}(X),\ 0\le g\le f\}\qquad(f\in C_{c}(X),\ f\ge0).
