Tangent Inequalities for the Wall Energy along Couplings and for the Wall-Confined Free Energy along Optimal Couplings

The wall energy lies above its tangent at a law with square-integrable wall force along every coupling, and the wall-confined free energy lies above its tangent, given by the score, along every optimal coupling.

Statement

In the setting of Noncommutative Laws, Couplings and the Wasserstein Distance: Standing Notation, let (D0,E0)(\mathcal{D}_{0},\mathcal{E}_{0}) be a free entropy penalty and let R>0R>0 be real. DR\mathcal{D}_{R}, WR\mathcal{W}_{R} and FRF^{R} are the domain, the wall energy and the wall force of radius RR; E:D→R\mathcal{E}:\mathcal{D}\to\mathbb{R}, on D=D0∩DR\mathcal{D}=\mathcal{D}_{0}\cap\mathcal{D}_{R}, is the wall-confined free energy of (D0,E0)(\mathcal{D}_{0},\mathcal{E}_{0}) with radius RR, with score domain DΞ\mathcal{D}_{\Xi} and score Ξ\Xi; and the coupling pairing Jγ1\mathcal{J}^{1}_{\gamma} is that of Marginal Isometries, Bounded Plans and Displacement Pairings for Noncommutative Laws §coupling-pairing.

1. (Wall energy) Let μ∈DR\mu\in\mathcal{D}_{R} have a square-integrable wall force of radius RR, let ν∈DR\nu\in\mathcal{D}_{R}, and let γ∈Π(μ,ν)\gamma\in\Pi(\mu,\nu) be any coupling. Then

WR(ν)≥WR(μ)−Jγ1(FR(μ)).\mathcal{W}_{R}(\nu)\ge\mathcal{W}_{R}(\mu)-\mathcal{J}^{1}_{\gamma}\bigl(F^{R}(\mu)\bigr).

2. (Free energy) Let μ∈DΞ\mu\in\mathcal{D}_{\Xi}, let ν∈D\nu\in\mathcal{D}, and let γ∈Π(μ,ν)\gamma\in\Pi(\mu,\nu) be an optimal coupling. Then

E(ν)≥E(μ)−Jγ1(Ξ(μ)).\mathcal{E}(\nu)\ge\mathcal{E}(\mu)-\mathcal{J}^{1}_{\gamma}\bigl(\Xi(\mu)\bigr).
